The Department of Natural Resources moved forward last week with plans to replace the Little Falls Lake dam and refill what’s currently an empty basin at Willow River State Park. The announcement represents the final recommendation by the department, which now begins its work with the Department of Administration to put those plans into action.
A woman became upset and jumped out of a car Sunday, March 27, on Highway 10 and 560th Avenue East in Prescott. The woman took off walking into a field. Deputies found the woman after a brief search. She was taken into custody before being transported to a hospital for an evaluation. Traffic troubles -- A Geo Tracker caked in mud was seen crossing double-yellow lines in traffic and speeding March 22 on Highway 10 near 1200th Street in Prescott.
A caller reported March 15 that there was a home in rural Elmwood filled with feces, urine and was occupied by more than 40 dogs. The dogs were allegedly fed exclusively with “roadkill.” Deputies informed county land management officials, the town of El Paso and the state's Department of Agriculture about the report. A Twin Cities man was arrested inside an SUV suspected at the scene of multiple crimes between St. Croix and Pierce counties -- including the theft of a church trailer. St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Scott Knudson said the vehicle, a white Honda Pilot, was believed to be linked to more than 20 burglaries of storage units in Hudson, as well as the theft of a church trailer in Prescott. Knudson said 24 separate incidents have been documented as of last week, between St. Croix County thefts on Commerce Drive, on County Road J and in Houlton.
HUDSON -- St. Croix County officials know dry conditions will likely return here, in spite of a soaking rain that dowsed much of the area starting Tuesday, March 15. When they do, the county will have a new resource -- the Red Flag alert system -- to handle widespread burning bans. St. Croix County Emergency Support Services Director Stephen T’Kach announced the plan Monday. “We are just entering our critical spring grass fire season and any dry spell will greatly increase conditions for fire dangers,” he said in a news release.

Rory O’Sullivan said he’s not sure if it was the luck of the Irish or just a coincidence that he’s becoming an American citizen on St. Patrick’s Day. “I just laughed,” the Pierce County prosecutor and Dublin native said about the timing -- a date he was assigned by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. “I guess God’s got a sense of humor about it.” O’Sullivan passed his citizenship test on Thursday morning. He’ll be sworn in during an afternoon ceremony in Bloomington, Minn.

HUDSON -- Felony charges were issued last week against a trio of Minnesota teenagers accused of pushing more than $500 worth of merchandise out of the New Richmond Walmart. St. Croix County prosecutors charged 18-year-old Sarah J. Nelson, 17-year-old Mikayla M. Mansour and 18-year-old Breanna N. Stoltz with one count each of felony retail theft. Stoltz was also charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession.
