Three Wildcat wrestlers head to state

Junior Nathan Fuller and senior Mitchell Williamson won individual titles and junior Chance Kamrowski placed second at the WIAA Division 1 Wrestling Sectional at Wausau West High School Saturday, Feb. 17.

All three Wildcats advanced to the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Championships beginning Thursday, Feb. 22, in Madison.

Williamson faced Hudson's Cole Godbout for the second time in two weeks in the title match at 285 pounds, and after earning an overtime win at the New Richmond regional Williamson posted a 7-3 decision over Godbout to take the sectional title.

Williamson advanced to the finals by pinning Connor Berry of Marshfield in 1 minute, 17 seconds.

Fuller beat Dylan Wachtler of New Richmond for the second time in two weeks in the 152-pound sectional semifinals before earning a 9-4 decision over Bergh Diebel of Wisconsin Rapids in the title match. He started his day by pinning Sam Molski of Stevens Point in 3:06.

Kamrowski opened with a 19-2 technical fall over Walker Bathke of Merrill and a 12-1 major decision over Travis Messer of New Richmond before losing to Alec Kurtz of Rhinelander in the 195-pound title match. But he came back to beat Layne Kalata of Wisconsin Rapids by technical fall, 17-2, in the wrestleback to clinch second place and a trip to state.

Senior Glen Pendleton also earned a wrestleback at 170 pounds after earning an 18-8 major decision over Cody Cicha of Hudson in the third place match. But Eau Claire Memorial's Levi Smith was able to hold off Pendleton for second place and the trip to state.

Sophomore Garrett Borth won his opening match at 145 pounds on his way to a fourth place finish while Ethan Cernohous (106), Bennett Cernohous (113), Michael Rebozo (120), Leonard Robinson (132), Luke Killian (160) and Garnett Ripley (220) all lost in the first round.

Fuller will take a record of 41-4 into the state tournament and face Bryce Henschel of West Bend East (37-9) in Thursday's opening round beginning at 3 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison. Williamson (30-1) will take on Jesse Fiers of Holmen (39-11) while Kamrowski (40-6) goes up against Adam Jones of South Milwaukee (41-3).

Action continues at the Kohl Center Thursday night with quarterfinals beginning at 5:15. Consolation round matches begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23 with consolation semifinals at 1:45 p.m. and championship semifinals at 7 p.m. Consolation wrestlebacks and third and fifth place matches begin Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. with championship matches scheduled for 5 p.m.
