Parno named associate head track coach at MSU-Mankato
Mankato, Minn. ---Mike Turgeon, head coach of the Minnesota State University-Mankato men's and women's track and field programs, has announced that River Falls native Chris Parno has been promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach.
Parno, in his seventh year with the program, is a four-time Central Region Men's Indoor Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year, and one-time Men's Outdoor Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Parno serves as Minnesota State track & field's recruiting coordinator and coaches the Maverick sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams.
"We're fortunate that we have one of the top track and field recruiters and sprint coaches in NCAA Division II in Chris Parno," said Turgeon. "Chris relates well with our student-athletes and understands where Maverick track and field fits in, not only with the mission of the department of athletics, but with the university. We're looking forward to building on the success we've had with Chris in the previous seasons and now with his new role as associate head coach in our program.
"I want to thank Coach Turgeon and our athletic director Kevin Buisman for believing in what we've been able to achieve here at Minnesota State the past seven years," Parno said. "I have been fortunate to work with some phenomenal groups of athletes and coaches here at Minnesota State, and I look forward to continued success on the track, while assisting our athletes on their paths to graduation."
Prior to Minnesota State, Parno spent two years as an assistant track and field coach at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Parno was a member of the University of Minnesota-Duluth track and field team from 2005-2010. While with the Bulldogs, he earned All-North Central (NCC) and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) honors seven times and captured the NSIC title in the 400-meter hurdles as a senior. Parno also competed in the heptathlon (2009 conference runner-up), decathlon (2012 conference runner-up) and 4x400-meter relay.
A 2005 graduate of River Falls High School, Parno was a state qualifier and first team all-region selection in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles and earned second team All-Big Rivers Conference honors in the 110 meter high hurdles as a senior. He also started for two years at wide receiver and defensive end on the Wildcat football team.
