Falcons shine on spring trip

The UW-River Falls softball team made the best of its annual spring break trip to Florida last week by posting a record of 10-2 to improve to 13-3 heading into its scheduled home opener Thursday, March 29, against St. Mary's University.

The Falcons outscored their opponents 87-51 while blasting 17 home runs in their 12 games, including six by sophomore catcher Noelle Senour. Senour hit two home runs in UWRF's 15-7 win over Becker College (Mass.) March 12 and two more in the Falcons' 5-2 win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on the final day of the trip March 17. She's batting .453 with 17 RBI through the first 16 games of the season.

Senior utility player Maddie Studnicka went deep four times down south while also saving four games in the circle.

UWRF opened the trip by beating Concordia University Wisconsin, 8-4 and Smith College (Mass.), 8-0, Sunday, March 11. After beating Becker in their first game Monday, March 12, they topped North Park University (Ill.), 7-1, later in the day before defeating Lakeland University, 10-8, and Minnesota-Morris, 8-1, March 13.

The Falcons took a day off Wednesday, March 14, and suffered their first loss of the trip, 7-6, to Gordon College (Mass.) Thursday, March 15, before bouncing back to beat Framingham State University (Mass.), 3-1. They dropped an 18-4 decision to Lake Forest College (Ill.) and edged Transylvania University (Kentucky), 2-1, Friday, March 16 before closing the trip with an 11-1 win over St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) and the 5-2 win over MCLA Saturday, March 17.

Junior utility player Kaia Dorn is batting an even .500 with two home runs and eight RBI appearing in 12 of the Falcons' first 16 games while senior Aiyana Ledwein is hitting .474 with 15 RBI while senior infielder Amber Galloway is hitting .438.

Junior righthander Payton Speckel has made 12 appearances in the circle this season and is 6-1 with 42 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched while freshman Hannah Stegeman is 6-1 with a 3.42 earned run average in eight appearances.

The Falcons are scheduled to host St. Mary's University in a doubleheader at Ramer Field Thursday, March 29, beginning at 2 p.m. They begin WIAC play with a twin bill at UW-Whitewater Saturday, April 7.
