The River Falls girls’ swimming and diving team received a pair of record-setting performances from junior Ellery Ottem in its first Big Rivers Conference dual meet of the season last week at Eau Claire Memorial.
Ottem set a new Eau Claire pool record in the 50-yard freestyle and a new River Falls school record in the 100-yard breaststroke in the Wildcats 110-76 loss to the Old Abes.
While Ottem won two events in record-setting fashion, Jane Briese also won a pair of individual events and had a hand in a first place relay finish for the Wildcats against the Old Abes.
Ottem’s winning time of 24.83 seconds was a new Memorial pool record while her time of 1:09. 32 broke her own River Falls school record.
Briese won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.24 and the 200 freestyle in 2:10.34 and teamed up with Annie Ottem, Stephanie Derks and Makenna Anderson for a first place time of 1:57.29 in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Wildcats’ 200 medley relay team of Sadie Ottem, Ellery Ottem, Briese and Annie Ottem finished second with a time of 2:02.22 and Sadie Ottem was second in the 100 freestyle in 1:03.29 while divers Lilly Langer and Kayleigh Volkman placed second and third, respectively, with personal best scores.
“It was a good start to tough conference competition and I'm looking forward to building on this meet,” River Falls coach Caitlin Gargulak said.
The Wildcats’ next meet is the Maroon and Gold Invite at the University of Minnesota Saturday September 18.
