Girls' lifters are state champs

Senior Hailee Markey won her third straight individual title to lead the River Falls girls to their second consecutive state title at the Wisconsin High School Powerlifting Association State Meet March 2-3 at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center in Appleton.

Markey broke her own state record in the deadlift on her way to winning the heavyweight division for the third year running. Markee's classmate, Coryn Davidson, finished second.

Freshman Anna Anderson turned in a fourth-place finish in her state debut and and junior Skylar Ross placed fourth in her weight class. Junior Michaela Kramolis added a sixth-place finish, senior Alana Feser placed eighth while sophomore Kyle Kubera and junior Violet Plante both finished 12th and senior Elly Bjork was 13th.

River Falls won the team title with 43 points while Winneconne and New Richmond each scored 25 points to finish second and third, respectively.

Sophomore Turner Norum turned in the highest finish for the River Falls boys by placing 10th in his weight class. Sophomore Logan Zyduck took 11th and senior Adrian Herbst was 13th while freshman Ryan Briggs placed 14th, junior Dylan Daly-Schreiner and freshman Tanner Zepczyk were both 15th, freshman Jack Gehl was 16th and freshman Andrew Olson and junior Jack Bond were both 19th.

Bob Burrows has been sports editor at the River Falls Journal since 1996 and at the Hudson Star-Observer since 2009. Prior to joining the Journal, Burrows served as sports editor with Ledger Publications in Balsam Lake, Wis. A native of Bayonne, N.J. and a U.S. Navy veteran, Burrows attended Marquette University before completing his studies at UW-River Falls in 1992.
