Boys' hockey: Wildcat skaters lose twice

The new year got off to a bumpy start for the Wildcat hockey team.

The Cats slipped to 2-4-0 in Big Rivers Conference play with a 4-1 loss to Chippewa Falls on the road Thursday, Jan. 3 before getting shut out by Hayward, 3-0, in a nonconference game Saturday, Jan. 5, at Wildcat Centre.

River Falls, now 5-9-0 overall, will visit BRC leader Eau Claire North (8-5-1, 5-0-0) Thursday, Jan. 10 before hosting Providence Academy (Minn.) Saturday, Jan. 12, at 8 p.m.

Jake Bergmanis accounted for the Wildcats' only goal of the week last week with a power play tally in the 4-1 loss at Chippewa Falls (8-4-1, 4-1-0). Bergmanis' goal came at the 15:09 mark of the second period after the Cardinals had taken a 3-0 lead. Braedon Harer earned an assist on the play.

Wildcat goalie Jake Miller finished with 28 assists as Chippewa Falls outshot River Falls 32-21.

Miller made 34 saves Saturday and the Wildcats outshot Hayward 39-37 but came up empty on five power play attempts in a 3-0 loss to the Hurricanes (11-3-0).
