Hockey: RF skaters top Hayward

River Falls scored single goals in each period and goalie Jake Miller stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced as the Wildcats defeated Hayward, 3-1, in a nonconference hockey game Saturday, Jan. 6 in Hayward.

Jake Bergmanis scored the first goal of the game 10 minutes, 4 seconds into the opening period, assisted by Tye Kusilek and Cody Wilson before Zak Paulson made the score 2-0 with an unassisted goal 1:39 into the second period.

Hayward cut the Wildcat lead in half with 4:09 remaining in the second and the Cats killed off two Hurricane power plays in the third period before Joe Stoffel's empty net goal with 1:14 remaining, assisted by Bergmanis, made the final 3-1.

Hayward was 0-for-5 on the power play while the Wildcats were 0-for-3. Each team finished with 22 shots on goal.

River Falls, now 4-8-1 overall (2-3-0 Big Rivers Conference) hosted Eau Claire North (10-3-1, 3-2-0) this past Tuesday, Jan. 9, and will visit top-ranked Hudson (11-0-0, 5-0-0) Thursday, Jan. 11 before a nonconference game at St. Paul Highland Park Saturday, Jan. 13.
