Girls Golf: Wildcats take control in BRC

Balance has been a key to the Wildcat girls’ golf team this season. And that balance was on full display in the final week of the regular season as the Cats’ won three more conference matches to widen their lead in the BRC standings.

River Falls fired a 190 on its home course Monday, Sept. 10, 185 Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Mill Run in Eau Claire, and 182 Thursday, Sept. 13 at Lake Wissota to remain unbeaten in conference play.

The Wildcats will take a commanding 9.5 point lead over second place Hudson into the final week of the regular season, beginning with a make-up match at Lake Hallie Golf Course in Eau Claire Tuesday, Sept. 18 followed by the BRC Tournament Thursday, Sept. 20, at Tanglewood Greens in Menomonie.

River Falls remained unbeaten in conference a 15-stroke win Thursday, Sept. 13, at Lake Wissota. All four of the Cat’s top scorers finished within a stroke of each other as Jaden Woiwode and Madison Grundstrom tied for fourth place with scores of 45 and Hannah Harper and Makaylin Harer tied for fifth with 46 each to give the Cats a team score of 182. Four-time defending BRC champion Eau Claire Memorial was a distant second with 197.

Two days earlier Harper tied Hudson’s Paige Hillman and Eau Claire North’s Sidney Brown for medalist honors with a round of 40, and all five Wildcats finished in the top ten as they edged second place Hudson by seven strokes.

Woiwode shot a 46 to place fourth and Harer was fifth with 48 while Grundstrom shot 51 to give the Cats a team total of 185. Madyson Shew finished with a 55 to finish in a tie for tenth place.

The Cats started the week on the hill at the RIver Falls Golf Club and posted four of the top five scores of the day to finish 11 strokes better than runner-up Hudson.

Harper led the way with a second place round of 41 and Harer finished in a three-way tie for fourth with a score of 49 while Grundstrom and Shew each shot 50 to tie for fifth. Meade and Brown each shot 40 to share medalist honors.

Following the BRC Tournament in Menomonie Sept. 20, the Cats will open WIAA Tournament play at the Superior Regional at Nemadji Golf Course Wednesday, Sept. 26. The WIAA Sectional is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 1, at New Richmond.
