Boys Basketball: Wildcats fall in regional final

River Falls led 16-14 with 7 minutes remaining in the first half but went the next 9 minutes, 37 seconds without a field goal while Onalaska used a 13-0 run to take control and defeat the Wildcats 54-46 in a WIAA Division 2 regional final in Onalaska Saturday night, March 2.

The second-seeded Hilltoppers rattled off 13 straight points late in the first half to take a 27-16 lead with two minutes remaining and led 29-18 after the Wildcats closed the half with a pair of free throws.

River Falls rallied to pull within four, 50-46, when JT Dougherty scored from under the basket with 1:03 to go but it was the Cat’s last basket of the game and the Hilltoppers sealed the win from the free throw line.

Dougherty was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 16 points. Payton Flood and Mike Vitt scored seven points each while Adam Feyereisen finished with six points, eight assists and two steals.

River Falls’ season comes to an end with a record of 16-7 while Onalaska improved to 20-4 and advances to face top-seeded La Crosse Central (22-2) in a sectional semifinal Thursday, March 7.
