Murphy honored at UWGB again

Former Wildcat Karly Murphy, a redshirt freshman on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women's basketball team, has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the second time in three weeks after scoring a career-best 18 points in UWGB's 72-40 win over Bradley Saturday, Dec. 16.

Murphy's career afternoon came on a 7-for-10 effort from the field and saw the redshirt freshman pull down five rebounds, dole out two assists and collect one steal in 25 minutes.

She was also featured on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Day for a halftime buzzer beater from the opposite three-point line.

Murphy previously earned Horizon League Freshman of the Week honors after notching her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in Green Bay's 63-55 victory over No. 23 Marquette Dec. 2.

Murphy has started ten of Green Bay's first 11 games. and is averaging 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds. Her .532 field goal percentage leads the team. The Phoenix are off to a 10-1 nonconference start, their best since the 2011-12 season, and are ranked No. 21 in the AP Top 25 poll.

Murphy was a two-time Big Rivers Conference Player of the Year and two-time Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-State selection at River Falls High School in 2015-16. She surpassed both 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her high school career and led the Wildcats to their first-ever WIAA State Tournament appearance in 2015.

UW-Green Bay will open Horizon League Play Thursday, Dec. 28, at Wright State.
