Second half surge carries Cardinals past Wildcats

River Falls led 13-12 late in the second quarter before Chippewa Falls scored four unanswered touchdowns to defeat the Wildcats, 40-21, Friday night, Sept. 23, in Chippewa Falls.

The Cats trailed 12-0 before scoring Logan Graetz hit Matthew Wachtler for an 83-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, then found older brother Mason Graetz for a 65-yard score to put River Falls up 13-12 with 4 minutes left in the second quarter.

The Cardinals took the lead for good with a touchdown with 31 second left in the half, and extended their lead to 40-13 in the second half before Logan Graetz scored on a 3-yard run and hit Wachtler with the two point conversion with 5:50 remaining to make the final 40-21.

Logan Graetz completed 14-of-29 passes for 242 yards. River Falls gained just 28 yards on the ground.

The Wildcats, now 1-5 overall, 0-4 in the Big Rivers Conference, will visit Superior (4-2, 2-2) Friday, Sept. 30. The Spartans are coming off a 42-21 loss to Menomonie this week.
