UWRF women sweep UWEC, Kuechle records back-to-back shutouts
The UW-River Falls women’s hockey team swept UW-Eau Claire, 2-0 and 6-0, in a WIAC home-and-home series over the weekend to improve to 4-3-0 on the season.
After hosting St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Nov. 26, the Falcons return to WIAC action with a home-and-home series against UW-Superior Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7.
Katie Batters and Chloe Kinsel had a goal apiece and Ashley Kuechle stopped all 24 shots she faced in last Friday night’s 2-0 victory at Eau Claire.
Batter scored the only goal the Falcons would need just over five minutes into the first period with assists from Kinsel and Dani Buehrer. Kinsel added an insurance goal late in the third period, with assists from Leah Gefroh and Jenna Ulberg, to make the final 2-0.
UWRF outshot UWEC 36-24.
Saturday night at Hunt Arena, Brianna Breiland scored a pair of goals and Kuechle made 12 saves to record her second straight shutout.
Dani Sibley opened the scoring at the 7:31 mark of the first, assisted by Brook Story and Karleigh Wolkerstorfer, before Batters netted a power play goal with an assist from Sam Greeley to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the end of one.
Breiland tallied the only goal of the second period, at the 13:05 mark, with Kait Mason and Kendal Evenson earning assists.
Story scored an unassisted goal 11:41 into the third period and Alice Cranston made it a 5-0 game just over a minute later, assisted by Gefroh and Ulberg, before Breiland netted her second goal of the game on a power play with just over two minutes remaining, assisted by Crysta Lowell, to make the final 6-0.
The Falcons outshot Eau Claire, 44-12.
UWRF will travel to UW-Superior Friday, Dec. 6, before returning home to host the Yellowjackets Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:05 p.m.
