Letter to the Editor RTSA

On Thursday, April 15. I was scheduled to be part of a Zoom meeting with my state representative, Shannon Zimmerman, to discuss the proposed state budget. This meeting had been arranged by WISDOM, a Wisconsin Interfaith Coalition, that had organized a Madison Action Day.

I was very disappointed to see not Mr. Zimmerman on the Zoom but the green phone icon of one of his aides -- someone who wouldn’t even join us face to face, but only managed a phone connection. Though this aide said he would take our budget concerns to our representative, I find the secondhand nature of interacting with constituents very concerning. I have no idea how any of the clearly and carefully prepared talking points that were presented by the others on the Zoom call might have been conveyed to the legislator or even if they were.

I didn’t vote for the aide to represent me in the 30th District. This aide is not going to be the one to vote on the proposed budget. Our elected legislators are the voice of the people they serve. They need to hear our concerns and act on them.

Mr. Zimmerman was not part of the Legislature in 2011 when the gerrymandered map was created; he inherited this district in 2017. But I fear that he has decided he doesn’t need to listen to his constituents even though his job is to represent us. And once again our democracy is compromised.
