Fair mapping has broad support
I hope this paper and the citizens of this community endorse the movement to ban gerrymandering in Wisconsin.
Bills have been introduced in the Wisconsin Legislature with bipartisan support. Bipartisan support is not surprising. A Marquette Law School poll showed that 72% of Wisconsinites want to ban gerrymandering and that includes 63% of Republicans and 76% of Independents. 56 counties have passed referendums or resolutions to end gerrymandering – representing over 82% of the state’s population.
People of Wisconsin are sick and tired of elected officials, from either party, rigging the district maps to keep themselves in power. We want fair play and a level playing field. We want to pick our representatives, NOT have the representatives draw maps that pick their electors.
Gerrymandering is wrong, whether Republicans or Democrats are doing it. Let’s solve this problem now and pass bills that take map-drawing away from the Legislature and give it to a non-partisan commission that uses non-partisan demographic data for redistricting. Government of the people, by the people and for the people depends on it.
Let your legislators know you want fair maps drawn by a non-partisan commission. Join with groups across the state (American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters, Fair Maps and the Pierce County Grass Roots Organization locally) to advocate effectively for fair map drawing.
