Letters to the editor: Bob Gustafson's legacy
Shame on us, America
TO THE EDITOR
On June 6, 2019, Europe and the United States commemorated the 75th anniversary of the D-day invasion that started the liberation of Europe in WWII. In a historic altering event 75 years ago, our country led a coalition of forces to bring down a global threat to freedom and democracy.
On the shores of this hallow ground in 2019, the U.S. is represented by the least qualified commander and chief to honor our American, Canadian, British and French veterans who gallantly fought to defeat the fascist dictators of the Nazi regime. This minority elected leader of the free world is unequivocally and unabashedly embraced by the same ideological, white supremacists, neo Nazis we fought 75 years ago.
Trump's presence and his lack of leadership, ethical and moral character is a disgrace to our nation. It is not a moment for us to feel pride that we have a nationalist liar, cheater, misogynist and racist in our office on the 75th anniversary of D-Day. This is not America at our greatest but at the precipice of our decline, enabled by a GOP that has traded all of its character, moral fiber and backbone for a tax cut and judges.
Shame on us America, shame on the once proud GOP who have enabled this behavior and erosion of moral standing. Trump's presidency and his gerrymandered supporters are an indelible stain on our fabric of the Constitution, principles, ethics and global stage.

Shouldn't the same apply to Trump?

Imagine there is a President Hillary Clinton and following Robert Mueller's Special Counsel investigation, a conservative columnist, for a mainstream magazine, summarizes the extensive report's findings by stating:
"A foreign power interfered in the U.S. election to help the Clinton campaign. The Clinton campaign welcomed the help and repeatedly lied about it. The lying successfully obscured some questions the investigation sought to answer; in the end, it found insufficient evidence to charge a broader conspiracy. President Clinton, in public and in private, worked to stop the investigation."
What would you suggest we do with President Clinton after this easily understood summary? Should we "move on" because it was just a partisan witch hunt or should we impeach her? Perhaps, lock her up?
Now read that summary of the Mueller report again, but replace the word "Clinton" with the word "Trump" and you will be reading what Republican David Frum actually wrote last month in the Atlantic.
If you know what kind of recourse for justice you would want for an imaginary President Hillary Clinton following the Mueller investigation, shouldn't the same apply to a real President Trump?
Bob Gustafson's legacy
TO THE EDITOR
Friday, June 7, I attended the memorial service at the First Congregational Church, officiated by Rev. Chris Myers, for Robert (Bob) Gustafson, a man whom I believe, stands for all of what it means to be an American; someone whose life, extended over many troubled times, such as the wars, protests, political, religious and racial conflicts as well as the changing sexual and cultural identities, to remind us of what it means to be an American; to be part of the democratic experiment that has proven possible, and encourage us to keep up the struggle to be what our founding fathers intended.
(Permission given by his wife, Ann Gustafson, to quote these so meaningful words of Bob's printed on the Memorial card by the Bakken and Young Funeral Services.
"Revere life and stand in awe of God's wonderful creation. Work to protect it and preserve the belief that God loves all and all deserve the love and forgiveness that God offers each one of us. Stand up for equal justice and opportunities for all regardless of color, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, or economic status. Don't ever give up the good fight to preserve the dreams of our founders of our great country, that all people are created equal."
Thank you, Bob, for your life as a dedicated American and reminding us of who we are as Americans. You will long be remembered for all you contributed to this community in addition to these guiding words you leave as part of your legacy.
