10 YEARS AGO, JUNE 2004 The race for top spot of the River Falls High School Class of 2004 was a four-way tie - Lauren Koshere, Chelsea Lauing, Blake Lindevig and Mike Popelka shared the honors. 20 YEARS AGO,  JUNE 2, 1994 The high school class of 1994 graduated with Kjellrun Bye and Andy Zalusky sharing valedictorian honors. Good Shepherd Christian Academy grads included Joleene Ottum, Seth Belz and Heather Hewitt with Hewitt named valedictorian of her class. 30 YEARS AGO, MAY 31, 1984 River Falls High School commencement ceremony was held May 20 with Peter TerMatt named valedictorian and Alexis Karolides salutatorian. A record 540 students graduated from UW-River Falls on May 27. Brian Schultz, assistant professor of economics, was named 1984 Distinguished Teacher. Boyd Huppert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Huppert, received the Chancellor’s Award recognizing his academic excellence, leadership, service, and commitment. 40 YEARS AGO, MAY 30, 1974 High school graduation was held May 24 with Bruce Hasselquist leading the class as valedictorian and Steve Swensen as Salutatorian. The John T. Chapman award (given to the top 10% in memory of RFHS grad John Chapman who was killed in the Vietnam War) were Juliann Gray, Marla Hainline, Teri Hammer, Sheila Harsdorf, Alison Haskins, Benita John, Kathleen Johnson, Kay Korsgaard, Paul Kremer, Becky Larsen, Terry Linehan, Bobbie O’Connell, Dan Pearson, Kathy Sutten and Wendy Winter. Over at UW-River Falls 553 students graduated with 41 receiving master’s degrees. Norman Christianson, former UW regent, and Theodore Jenson, dean of the college of education at Bowling Green were named 1974 Distinguished Alumnus; and Dr. Charles Kao awarded Distinguished Teacher Award. 50 YEARS AGO, MAY 28, 1964 High school seniors numbered 108 this year with Charles Stirrat named valedictorian and Gloria Williams salutatorian. Janice TeWinkel was named to Badger Girls State and John Sabaka and Douglas Nelson to Badger Boys State. There were 26 River Fall sites among the 324 graduates at Wisconsin State College at River Falls. 60 YEARS AGO, MAY 27, 1954 Sixty-two graduated from River Falls High School on May 28. Top ranking senior was Richard Doetkott and second ranking was Ann Kofoed. Bob Dawson received the American Legion Medal, letters in football and basketball as well as an athletic scholarship. Wisconsin State College in River Falls was to graduate 110 students this year. 70 YEARS AGO, June 1, 1944 Top ranking students for the senior class at the high school were Newton Nelson and David Benson. Boxing letters were received by Don Mueller, Ed Branigan, Ed Jenkins, Douglas Jenkins, Loren Borner, Don Goodrich, Dave Smith, Merle Herum, Bill Andrea, Bob Finstad, Enos Smith, Harry Borner, Wendell Johnson and Gene Dopkins.
