River Falls senior Ellery Ottem added two more medals to her trophy case Saturday by finishing fourth in the 200 yard freestyle and fifth in the 100 yard freestyle at the WIAA Division 1 Girls State Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at Waukesha South High School.
It was Ottem’s third and final appearance at the state meet for Ottem, who last week signed a National Letter of Intent to swim collegiately at the University of South Carolina. She was the Division 2 state champion in both the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle as a freshman in 2019 and finished fourth in both events at the 2021 Division 1 state meet. She’s the River Falls school record holder in both events.
Saturday she captured her second fourth place medal in the Division 1 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 48.7 seconds and was fifth in the 100 freestyle in 50.38 seconds. Freshman Ella Antoniewski of Waukesha South/Mukwonago won the 200 freestyle in 1:48.07, and senior Hailey Tierney of Arrowhead won the 100 free in a state record time of 48.52 seconds. Arrowhead also won the Division 1 team title.
Three of Ottem’s Wildcat teammates– junior Rachel Everson, senior Kayleigh Volkman and freshman Avery Singel competed in Saturday’s Division 1 state diving competition.
Everson was the lone Wildcat to reach the finals and ended up placing 11th with a total score of 392.2 after being in 13th place after the prelims and semifinals. Volkman finished 21st in the 24-diver field with a score of 163.1 in the prelims while Singel was 22nd with 161.6.
