River Falls took a tenuous 1-0 lead into the seventh inning of Thursday’s Big Rivers Conference matchup against Eau Claire North before coming out on the short end of a 4-3 extra-inning decision to split their two-game series with the Huskies.
Eau Claire North got a run in the seventh to tie the score before scoring three times in the top of the eighth to take a 4-1 lead. The Wildcats came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-run double by Elijah Baker but Baker was left stranded at second.
River Falls’ starter Cayden Mueller kept the Huskies off the board through the first five innings and the game remained scoreless until Teddy Norman’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies got an unearned run in the top of the seventh to tie the score, and the Cats got a two-out double from Thatcher Anderson in the bottom of the inning but couldn’t get him past third. Two Wildcat errors in the top of the eighth led to three Husky runs before the Cats came up a run short in their final at-bat.
Mueller struck out five and walked four while allowing three hits in five innings on the mound while Jaren Schwantz allowed four runs, two earned, on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 2 ⅓-innings of work. Brody Rudolph recorded the final two outs.
The Wildcats, now 7-3 in BRC play, 11-4 overall, will visit Osceola (3-10) for a nonconference game Friday.
