River Falls Public Library

The River Falls Public Library is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library is closed on Sundays. The library will be closed on Thursday, November 25 - Sunday, November 28, 2021, Friday, December 10, Thursday December 23 - Saturday December 25. 

Gingerbread contest 

Between Monday, Nov. 29, and Wednesday, Dec. 1, drop off your gingerbread creation.

Categories include:

Whimsical Design

  • Adult – Ages 18 & up

  • Group/Family – Created with adults and children, all ages

  • Teens – Ages 12 - 17 (no help from adults)

  • Youth – Ages 11 and under (no help from adults)

Traditional/Architectural Design

  • Adult – Ages 18 & up

  • Group/Family – Created with adults and children, all ages

  • Teens – Ages 12 - 17 (no help from adults)

  • Youth – Ages 11 and under (no help from adults)​

Kits – All ages

Graham Cracker House/Design – Ages 5 and under (with adult help)

First place will receive a $25 Chamber Check prize for each category; second place will receive library prize bundles for each category; and People’s Choice will be awarded a $50 Chamber Check prize. 

Entry into Traditional/Architectural or Whimsical categories must be original. No gingerbread kits allowed except in the Kit design category. All entries must have major components (such as walls and roofs) constructed of gingerbread. Traditional/Architectural designs can be buildings of any sort. Whimsical designs can be non-building structures and scenes.

Sucker sticks, wrapped candies, battery-operated lights and minimal non-edible décor is allowed.

Entries must have been constructed from Nov. 1, 2021 – Dec. 1, 2021 and must be no bigger than 24”x18” and must be freestanding. You may work in groups, but you may only be a part of one entry. Teens and youth categories should be judged according to age appropriateness. (Santa’s Elves will know if grown-ups were helping!)

Drop off a completed entry form (which can be found in the library and online) with the finished gingerbread entry at the library during the designated dates below.

Completed entries must be delivered during the library’s open hours beginning Monday, Nov. 29, and no later than 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

People’s Choice voting will take place from Thursday, Dec. 2 – Wednesday, Dec. 8.

All winners will be announced at the Holiday Open House on Thursday, Dec. 9.

Creations will remain on display at the library through the end of the day on Monday, Dec. 20, and must be picked up by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22. Entries not  picked up will be discarded.

Upcoming events

Winter Open House

On Thursday, Dec. 9, 12-7:30 p.m. at the River Falls Public Library, 140 Union St., the annual Winter Open House is free and open to the public. The event will feature live music, refreshments, crafts, performances by the River Falls High School Costumed Carolers and the Winsome Hollow String Band, henna art, face painting, games with Fox Den Books and live reindeer. Everyone is encouraged to stop in and vote for their favorite Gingerbread creation throughout the day.

This virtual event is Thursday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. Watch a live, interactive screening in the Lower Level Community Room at the library, or at home on the library’s Facebook page or YouTube channel.

Jimenez is a New York Times bestselling author, Food Network champion and founder of Nadia Cakes. Chapter2Books will be at the event selling books.

Al & Mrs. Al’s Kettle Corn will be selling bags of kettle corn in the lobby from 3-7 p.m. for $6 per bag while supply lasts.
