Two people were hospitalized Saturday after the car they were in crashed and caught fire in rural Hudson.

St. Croix County Sheriff's Office deputies were called at 10:32 p.m. July 28 to 549 Chinnock Lane in the town of Troy, where a car overturned, leaving its two occupants trapped inside.

Sheriff Scott Knudson said the victims' names weren't immediately available, but confirmed they were River Falls-area men, ages 36 and 37.

He said the car's engine compartment caught fire after the crash.

They were extricated from the car by firefighters and were taken to Regions Hospital by ambulance, Knudson said. Both men were in critical condition at the time of the crash.

Knudson declined to comment on whether alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

"This is an ongoing investigation," he said, but added that investigators were looking into the role speed may have played in the crash, the debris from which included a tire hanging from a roadside tree.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
