Steven Avery asks for a new trial in the slaying of Teresa Halbach

Steven Avery wants a new trial.

The man who served 18 years in prison for a rape he didn't commit only to be convicted of killing Teresa Halbach in 2005, filed his request Monday in Manitowoc County Circuit Court.

Two public defenders now represent Avery, 46.

They said he should have been given the chance to show that others, including Avery's two brothers, had the motive to slay Halbach at the family's auto salvage yard near Mishicot.

Avery was sentenced to life in prison with no parole after a six-week trial in 2007. The state has also filed matters in the case.

Circuit Judge Patrick Willis will consider the request for a new trial. If he turns it down, it will go to a state appellate court.

Meanwhile, Avery's nephew Brendan Dassey, 19, is scheduled to file an appeal next week on his conviction in the Halbach slaying.

He was sentenced to life in prison in 2007, but he has a chance for a supervised release in 2048.
