Thursday morning Greenwood Elementary School fourth-graders heard a presentation and saw demonstrations by Rhonda Funmaker, a member of the Bear Clan and Ho-Chunk Tribal Nation.
Along with her son Sampson and cousin Jody, Funmaker talked about the display of handcarved wooden bowls, spoons and grinders Native American Indians used in the past and still use today to grind dried fruits, vegetables and meats. Students, gathered in the school's media center, were able to touch the items in the display, take turns grinding corn and wild rice and sampling a small baked cake.
The Funmaker family will also speak at the River Falls Public Library Thursday evening at 6:30. "Native American Foodways: A Presentation and Sampling Event" is held in conjunction with the Smithsonian's "Key Ingredients: America By Food" program being held this month at the library.
