Grammy award winner and jazz bands to perform in RF March 20
On Wednesday, March 20 the UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble 1 will share a concert with the Minnesota Youth Jazz Band and guest artist Lauren Sevian at 7 p.m. in the Doris Fuka Auditorium at River Falls High School. The event is free and open to the public.
Lauren Sevian is a Grammy award-winning baritone saxophonist who attended the Manhattan School of Music and soon thereafter began touring with groups such as Diva and the Artie Shaw Orchestra. Her quintet recently won first place in the "Made in NY" jazz competition and she can be heard regularly with the Mingus Big Band and countless other groups, notably the Dizzy Gillespie all star big band and the legendary Count Basie Orchestra.
UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble 1 is consistently one of the top college big bands in the nation. In 2017 they were named the top undergraduate big band in the nation by Downbeat Magazine. They have also had multiple recordings nominated for Grammy Awards and host one of the oldest and largest jazz festivals in the country each year.
The Minnesota Youth Jazz Band is a Twin Cities-based program offering multiple high level jazz experiences throughout the school year. The program has several different levels and the top band will be sharing this concert.
A concert of this caliber often has a higher ticket price; however, with generous support from UWEC, MYJB, and Schmitt Music the concert is offered for free to the public.
