Buckets of Hope

06/27/2008
Members of Hope Lutheran Church (ELCA) got together June 25 to assemble buckets full of cleaning supplies to donate to flood victims in southern Wisconsin. The church worked with Lund’s Hardware to purchase the supplies. In just a few days church members had donated enough money to cover the cost of the supplies. Jeff and Karen Rodewald volunteered to drive the buckets to Jefferson County, where they would be distributed to people in need.

Video: Touch-A-Truck rolls (and flies) into Meyer Middle School

06/23/2008
Kids and parents took advantage of the beautiful weather Saturday to get an up-close look at some of River Falls’ most interesting vehicles. Among the 52 “trucks” present at Touch-A-Truck were a Chinook CH-47 helicopter, a Huey helicopter, a fire ladder truck, construction equipment, a news van, the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile, tractors, an SUV stretch limo and more. Kids and adults were invited to explore the interiors of the vehicles and even honk the horns at the three-hour event. Look for more pictures of Touch-A-Truck in an online photo gallery at http://www.riverfallsjournal.com/photography.

Town-N-Country celebrates dairy heritage

06/20/2008
Dairy dominated the day as River Falls residents herded into town Thursday for the Chamber’s annual celebration of area agriculture. Town-N-Country day drew kids into its inflatable house, petting zoo, games and a street dance. People of all ages took advantage of a free pancake breakfast in the morning plus cherries jubilee and cheese curds in the afternoon, sponsored by AnchorBank, First National Bank and Security Financial Bank, respectively. Visitors checked out the milk moustache booth, games, an arts/crafts tent and the new-this-year marketplace. Throughout the day, many neighbors greeted each other and munched for-purchase brats, hamburgers and hot dogs while strolling along and taking the sights.

Karate kids?

06/02/2008
Not quite. This form of martial arts is from Korea and called Tae Kwon Do. Two local guys have taken over the Tae Kwon Do school in the River Falls industrial park. Isaac Ramberg and Brett Kroska have attained black-belt status and are both teachers and owners of the school. In the first video clip, Kroska concentrates before chopping a board in half. In the second clip, Ramberg demonstrates a few high kicks with Tae Kwon Do red-belt student Anita Lampert, a 2003 River Falls High School graduate. Look for the complete story in the June 4 print edition of the River Falls Journal.

UW-RF lab farm animals

05/14/2008
The animals UW-River Falls’ lab farms produce many different babies this time of year. A visit to both locations – Wasson Lane and Mann Valley – revealed calves, colts, fillies and lambs. Lab farm Director Bill Connolly said piglets are so susceptible to germs and disease that they stay in an off-limits barn until they’re old enough to join the other swine.

Volunteers needed for river cleanup

05/09/2008
It’s National River Cleanup Week. Join a troop of volunteers from the River Falls area for about one hour’s time as the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust holds its annual river cleanup along the banks of the Kinni. Last year’s turn out had over 100 people working to protect the plant and animal life as well as the river water itself along the 22-mile stretch. More are needed. The more volunteers who show up, the more of that stretch can be cleaned. Meet in the south part of ShopKo’s parking lot at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 17, to pick up a map and trash bags. Wear weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, sturdy shoes. Work gloves are also recommended. As the KRLT staff asks, do your part to keep the Kinni “cold, clean and clear.”

Talkin’ turkey

05/05/2008
Resident and local sportsman Orville “Orv” Robertson likes to hunt turkey and uses every bit of the bird, right down to its wing bones. He uses them to make custom turkey calls. He scrapes, boils and disinfects the three wing bones, cuts off the knuckles, sands them until they’re smooth then connects them with epoxy and uses a copper band to attach a lanyard. Read more of Robertson’s story in this week’s print edition of the River Falls Journal.
