The effects of national economic problems haven't hit Pierce County government finances yet, but careful monitoring of both income and expenses is needed, warns Pierce County's financial advisor. "I think there are a lot of people who would like to trade places with you guys," Bob Moore told county supervisors and department heads last week. Moore is president of Institutional Capital Management and Consulting, the Colorado-based firm that manages about $15 million of Pierce County's money. Those funds are still growing at an annual average rate of 4.6%, better even than the Wisconsin's Loc

Gilles, N5231 410th St., Ellsworth, teaches agriculture education and science in the Baldwin-Woodville school district. He was reportedly on his way to work when the accident occurred on Hwy. 63. The Pierce County Board formalized the purchase of a third house on Ellsworth's West Grove Street Tuesday night. This acquisition continues to implement a fairgrounds master plan, said County Board Chairman Paul Barkla. That plan calls for buying property on the south side of Grove Street as it becomes available. On Tuesday the board agreed to pay $190,000 for the house at 364 W. Grove. The property was bought from the Charles and Mary Cain Life Estate. Mary died in 2007, and Charles died early this year.
The mother and brother of a man who died after being escorted out of a River Falls bar by bouncers have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the business. Joseph R. Main St. The civil suit was filed in Pierce County last week by Janice Roscoe, Two Harbors, Minn., and Mark Woodard, Omaha, Neb., against bartender/manager Edward Roughton, 105 Elm St., River Falls, and The Library bar. Borrowing and budget were the focuses as St. Croix County Board members met Tuesday morning. The board accepted the best of six bids to borrow $3.18 million for building repairs and upgrades. The county will pay a true interest rate of 4.0244 percent on the money borrowed from Robert W. Baird & Company, Milwaukee. The debt, to replace the roof and heating and air conditioning system at the Government Center and replace emergency communications base station radios, will be repaid over seven years.
The principles he learned rising from bag boy to business owner and now as an employer of 200 people will carry over well to the Wisconsin Assembly, says Dave Hegenbarth. "As consumers we shop at and support businesses that return quality, value, services and satisfaction for our investment.

From support for schools to promoting alternative energy sources, Chris Danou plans to be an advocate for the small-town and rural residents of the 91st Assembly District. Danou, a patrol officer in Onalaska, is using vacation time in the last weeks before the election to devote himself to campaigning in this large, primarily rural district. Too often government assumes those who aren't wealthy or powerful aren't worthy of representation, said Danou, 41, who sees his job as a policeman as similar to the role he will take in the Assembly: Protecting the weak from those who would do them harm.
ELLSWORTH -- Pierce County's Highway Committee voted last week to recommend that the county add its own vehicle registration fee to the fee already collected annually by the state. The next step is to have a law drafted and presented to the Finance and Personnel Committee for its consideration. The proposal, adopted on a 3-2 vote of committee members, is intended to raise money for highway maintenance and repair.
