A 24-year-old Coon Rapids, Minn., man was stopped after he tried walking out of Dick's Fresh Market, 1121 S. Main St., last Thursday afternoon, April 18, without paying for a bottle of aftershave. The container of Afta allegedly was in his hand. A clerk called River Falls police.
Some classes in River Falls next school year will have student teachers representing an ancient culture and the most populated country in the world. More than 20 college-age Chinese students from Zhejiang International Studies University are expected to spend a few hours each Friday in the River Falls School District. Superintendent Tom Westerhaus, just back from China with a UW-River Falls delegation to seal the deal, said the Chinese student teachers will arrive in August.
A half-dozen vehicles parked in the Heritage Park lot, 200 block of West Maple Street, had either windows or windshields smashed overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday morning, April 16-17. Miscellaneous personal items visible inside, such as jacket, cellphone, cellphone charger cord, key and more, were also stolen. No one's been caught. Police Chief Roger Leque said there has also been other scattered and unsolved auto vandalisms recently in the city. In the Heritage Park vandalism spree, police say a rock was used to break a windshield in at least one case.
A manager and the employee he fired ended up in combat outside Copper Kettle restaurant, 1005 S. Main St., after 6 p.m. Saturday, April 13. After the fighting was done, the manager's pickup truck had been vandalized by the fired employee. Both men were given municipal citations for their actions. The 34-year-old manager was cited for disorderly conduct. The 21-year-old River Falls male, the one fired, was also cited for disorderly conduct plus criminal damage to property. The fight outside involved grabbing, pushing and punching.
A class of 15 began training to become full-fledged members of the River Falls Fire Department last month. Those recruits, who finished a screening process, boosted RFFD's roster to about 55 members. Fire Chief Scott Nelson said his department averages about 50 firefighters.
River Falls police were notified Saturday night, April 13, that law enforcement authorities in Emery County of southeastern Utah believe they have found the body of Donovan Alexander Campbell, 19, of River Falls. Police Chief Roger Leque says that next of kin have been notified.
HUDSON - The trial to determine the sanity of Aaron Schaffhausen in the murder of his three daughters in River Falls last July could be in the hands of the jury by Tuesday, April 16. At the end of Friday afternoon's testimony, prosecutor Gary Freyberg said he had only one witness left -- a medical doctor who will address Schaffhausen's mental condition. A crowd of about 100 turned out for the Sunday afternoon, April 7, dedication of the Eco Village in River Falls, 114 S. Apollo Road. Phase One of the Eco Village, four twin homes, is nearly completed and the homeowners will soon be moving in. Two more phases will be completed for this St.
Randy Kusilek and David Reese were knocked off the River Falls City Council in Tuesday's spring election. Katie Chaffee, former mayor of River Falls, edged Reese for the District 3 council spot, with 232 votes to Reese's 186. Kusilek was beaten by Diane Odeen for council at-large, 688-532. Last fall Odeen was defeated for state Assembly by incumbent Dean Knudson of Hudson. Two other City Council incumbents won: In District 1, it was David Cronk 242-192 over Dave Ostness.
"I saw this big white bird, but I was too far away," said River Falls resident Linda Amundsen. "I had to check it out." That was in February. Amundsen was in the parking lot at Family Fresh Market downtown. From afar she saw an unfamiliar bird on Lake George. Curious, she went to the White Pathway on the other side of the lake and followed the pathway to the observation deck. The "big white bird" was a trumpeter swan.
