PLUM CITY – Singer/songwriter Vicky Emerson returns to her Pierce County roots for an acoustic performance 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at Molly’s on Main in Plum City. Her most recent release, Dust and Echoes, received praise from City Pages which said, “Her songs thoughtfully reflect on love and loss...with graceful turns of phrase and affecting, country-tinged melodies that her lovely, hushed voice brushes with emotion.” “It’s probably been about eight years since I have played a show in Plum City. I’d say that’s too long,” said Emerson.
Is it too easy to recall politicians? That argument’s been made in Wisconsin, especially following the spate of recall elections in 2011 and 2012 after controversial legislation curbed the union rights of most, but not all, public employees, including teachers. A more relevant, broader question today should be: Isn’t it time to make it easier to recall politicians — an entire group of them — especially if they happen to be members of the U.S. Congress? A new CNN poll showed a 10% Congressional approval rating – an all-time polling low for Congress. Imagine that. You can’t sink much lower.

It’s commonplace for Minnesota readers to get together and talk about the state’s greatest novelists. Sinclair Lewis and F. Scott Fitzgerald are generally recalled in one breath. Younger folks will of course remember Louise Erdrich, Jon Hassler and Tim O’Brien. Seldom, in my experience, has the name J.F. Powers popped up in this or that pantheon of gopher novelists.
