Carol and I are enjoying our stay in Cedar Key, a small town on a group of islands on the Gulf Coast of Florida. After a long drive through the pine woods west of Gainesville, the view opens up to a vast expanse of tidal marsh grass, mangroves and oyster bars.
This special event is something designed to expose Hudson students, especially young girls (K-12) to future opportunities in STEM+ careers in science, technology, engineering, math and the applied arts. The event will be held Feb. 12, from 5-8 p.m. at Hudson Middle School. Students will have the opportunity to explore STEM+ careers by meeting and talking with female professionals and others in a variety of fields. Businesses will have booths to showcase what they do and the careers that make up their business.

1975 First baby of the year -- Ryan John, son of Kathleen and Lawrence “Bernie” Purfeerst of River Falls, checked in at St. Joseph Hospital at 11:05 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 3, to become the first baby of 1975 to be born here. Ryan beat Sherri Lynn Roen by about six hours. She arrived at the City Hospital on the same day. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Roen of rural River Falls. Ryan John, who took over the Purfeerst home at 524 N. Winter St., as of Monday night, Jan.
30 YEARS AGO On Tuesday night, Jan. 15, 1985, a fire that apparently started in a ceiling light fixture caused about $250,000 damage to the building and merchandise in one of River Falls’ oldest Main Street businesses, Kulstad Brothers Clothing, located at 201 S. Main St. One fireman, Gordy Pechacek, was injured when a high pressure hose broke and the nozzle struck him in the chest.

Someone, somewhere near old Happy Valley Road or Cady’s Lane may be feeding and taking care of an American Shorthair who got away from owner Gary Hanvelt. He’s neutered, silver with black stripes and wearing a black and orange breakaway collar, and a very special pet.
