Lawrence W. Jones, age 94 of River Falls, formerly of Berkley, Mich., died Friday, July 31, 2009 at Comforts of Home in River Falls. Visitation was held Sunday, August 2, 2009 from 5-7 p.m. at Bakken-Young Funeral Home in River Falls. Funeral services Thursday, August 6 in the Detroit, Michigan area and interment Friday, August 7 at Roseland Park Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the River Falls Food Shelf or Adoray Home Care & Hospice.
Margaret J. Hudson, age 95, of West St. Paul, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009, at River Falls Area Hospital. Memorial service 11 a.m. Monday, August 10 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1154 Seminole Ave., West St. Paul. Interment in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Mildred Daphine Larrabee, age 92, of Ellsworth, formerly of River Falls, died Thursday, July 30, 2009 at the Ellsworth Care Center, Ellsworth, Wis. Funeral services at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 3 at the River Falls United Methodist Church, River Falls, Wis. Rev. Janet Ellinger officiating. Burial in the Greenwood Cemetery. Elizabeth Lucille "Betty" Hutton, 86, of Hudson, died on Friday, July 24, 2009, at the Arthur Rose Care Home in New Richmond. Betty was born on June 29, 1923, in St. Paul, to Casper and Elizabeth (Harrison) Strobel. She attended St. Mark's School, and graduated from St. Paul Central High School. Betty furthered her education at the Minnesota School of Business where she earned a degree in bookkeeping and accounting. On Oct. 9, 1948, Betty was united in marriage to Howard James Hutton at St. Mark's Catholic Church in St. Paul. This union in marriage would be blessed with four children.
Michael Patrick Young, age 51, of River Falls, died at his home on Monday, July 13, 2009. He was born the son of Dennis and Patricia (Garey) Young on Aug. 6, 1957, in Minneapolis. Mr. Young is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth and Ellen. A private service was held. Services were entrusted to the O'Connell Family Funeral Home and Countryside Crematory.
Lynn Stock, 90, of River Falls, died per his wishes at the family farm in Troy Township, of natural causes. Lynn was born on Aug. 23, 1918, at the family farmstead to Frederich and Laura Ann (Moelter) Stock. He was raised on the Stock Farmstead, a century farm that was founded in 1869. He attended Glenmont Country School prior to the River Falls High School. Lynn was never married. He and his brother Alvin "Bud" farmed together their entire life until Bud's death in 2006. Lynn continued tending to his fields and animals right up until the end.
Norris Samb, 55 of Baldwin, died Monday, July 13, 2009, at his home in the town of Eau Galle. A memorial service for Mr. Samb was held Friday, July 17, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. Andrew Hinwood officiating. Burial of cremains will be held at a later date. Keehr Funeral Home of Spring Valley handled arrangements.
Duane Clark Larson, 65, of Karns, Tenn., passed away July 8, 2009, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. Duane grew up in Lund on a dairy farm. He earned his undergraduate degree from UW-River Falls and his doctorate in nuclear physics from Michigan State University. In 1968 Duane married fellow physics student Nancy Zander. Together they earned their doctorate degrees in 1972 and then joined the staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). In 2001 Duane retired from ORNL as director of the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator.
Charles Lee Geister died on July 18, 2009, at United Hospital in St. Paul, after a 23-year battle with heart disease and three week struggle with congestive heart failure. The son and fifth child of Clarence and Narelle (Atchison) Geister, was born on Jan. 12, 1939, in Prescott. He was taken in by his foster parents Welsie and Ethel (Peterson) Bredahl at the age of 11 months along with his brother Arnold "Bill". They both were raised on their truck garden farm on the highway in Beldenville.
Donavon A. "Donnie" Dahms, of Hamilton, Mont., and formerly of River Falls, died on Thursday, July 2, 2009. His death was due to cancer caused by Agent Orange exposure. He was 61 years old. The son of Eunice and Elmer (Pete) Dahms, Donnie was born in Spring Valley, and graduated from River Falls Senior High in 1965. A Vietnam veteran, Donnie served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1968. He was part of the 2nd Armored "Hell on Wheels" Division and a member of the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, "Blackhorse." Donnie was a handyman who could fix or build just about anything.
