Harold D. Morrow, age 73, of River Falls, passed away Friday, July 3, 2009, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in River Falls with Father Gerald Harris officiating. Interment in St. Bridget's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the Cashman-Hill Funeral Home and again on Tuesday from 9:30-10 a.m. at church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cashmanhillfuneralservice.com . Elizabeth "Betty" Young, 89, of Prescott, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at The Lutheran Home, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Survived by daughter, Rose Mary Boothe and husband Robert of Luck; son, Marvin Young Jr.
Mitchell Jay Phillips passed from this life on May 1, 2009. He was a resident of Austin, Texas, where he was retired with wife, Florence. He was born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where he lived until he joined the Air Force from 1951 to 1954. He then lived in the Los Angeles area where he met and married Florence, his wife of 52-1/2 years. They moved to Sheldon where he worked at Pickering Lumber Yard. He left there for Northwestern Electronics Institute, and then worked in River Falls at the university.
Thomas D. Cowan, 78, of Crystal, Minn., formerly of River Falls, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; and daughter, Rochelle. He is survived by sons: David, John (Kim) and Charlie (Patty); grandchildren: Isaiah, Larissa, Charlie Jr., Kelsey, Samantha, Nicole and Jenna; great-grandchild, Kylie; and sister, Betty House. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, he will be missed by many. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association. A private interment was held at Ft.
Donald L. "Doggie" Berg, died a year ago on June 25, 2008. A committal of his cremated remains, in procession with a New Orleans style jazz band, will take place on June 25, 2009, at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. All attending should arrive at assembly area #1 by 11:45 a.m. Cashman-Hill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Irene Torkelson, 95, and longtime resident of River Falls, died Wednesday, June 10, at the Kinnic Long Term Care center. Irene was born on Oct. 7, 1913, in Baldwin, to Eddie and Alice (Thompson) Torkelson. After her schooling, Irene did housekeeping for the VandeVredes of River Falls. She took to their family as if it was her own. She loved helping raise the kids and playing all sorts of games with them.
Cornelius John "Connie" TerMaat, 80, of River Falls, died on Wednesday, June 10, 2009. Connie was born in Arpin, to Henry and Bertha TerMaat, but grew up in Sheboygan, with sisters, Hattie, Margaret and Marion. There he developed an abiding love of Lake Michigan lighthouses and tugboats and an interest in the history of the Dutch American community in Wisconsin. Connie taught English at UW-River Falls from 1965 to 1989 including a stint as department chair.
Wise, courageous, dramatic and much-loved, Joany, age 64, died June 9, 2009, after a journey with cancer. Preceded in death by her father, Gordon Shepard, she is survived by her mother, Jeanne Newhall Shepard; sisters: Sybil (John) Eakin and Charlotte (Ward) Johnson; brother, John (Suzanne Brust) Shepard; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as dear friends and neighbors in River Falls. Joany attended Summit School, Villa Maria Academy, Loretto Heights College, and UW-River Falls, where she ranged hungrily through the disciplines. From her spiritual home at St.
Mary Alice Peterson, 83, of River Falls, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2009, at her residence after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on Nov. 17, 1925, in the town of Clifton to William and Anna (Cotter) Kirchner. Mary Alice was united in marriage to LeRoy Peterson in Big River on June 3, 1950. Together they farmed south of River Falls. Mary Alice was a master gardener, spending countless hours with her flowers; she also enjoyed baking desserts. She was very active with St. Bridget Catholic Church. Most of all, Mary Alice enjoyed taking care of her family.
