Merle "Mike" Michaelson, 88 Died Dec. 30, 2009 Merle "Mike" Michaelson was an educator and a churchman. He came to UW-River Falls in 1967 to chair the biology department, after having taught at Colorado State University, the University of Missouri at Columbia, and St. Cloud State University, and having done research on corn and flax for the USDA in Brookings, S.D. After retirement in 1983, he taught at Balob Teachers College in Papua New Guinea, and then returned to UWRF as Associate Dean of Arts and Science for five quarters.
Mandie Duckert, age 93, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and formerly of River Falls and Hammond, died on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, at the Hammond Congregational United Church of Christ. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to services at the church on Saturday, and also from 4-7 p.m. Friday evening at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton St., Baldwin. Arrangements are entrusted to the O'Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin.
Richard "Dick" Murphy, age 66, died peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side at his home in Diamond Bluff on Dec. 30, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 8, 1943 in Red Wing, Minn., to C.W. (Dick) and Florence (Huppert) Murphy. He attended parochial school at St. Mary's Big River until 8th grade. Dick then attended Prescott High School, graduating in 1961. He married Sheila Frazier Sept. 22, 1962, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Wing.
Patricia Pollack Lonie "Patsy", age 68, of River Falls, passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2009. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Nov. 24, 1941, daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Zak) Pollack. At the age of 19, Patricia married Charles Lonie on June 10, 1961, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Ashland, Va. Traveling brought her great pleasure, especially her time in Europe. She enjoyed spending time up north at the cabin and playing cards with her bridge club. She loved museums and studying art history, and was a voracious reader of mystery novels.
Gailon C. Roen, 69, of Hastings, Minn., died Dec. 21, 2009. Gailon was born Dec. 14, 1940, in Rice Lake, Wis., to Alvin and Myrtle Roen (Holmstrom). He served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy for 3 years and worked in the field of healthcare for 37 years. Gailon retired from Boynton Health Service at the University of Minnesota in 2004. Gailon is survived by his wife of 48 years, Peggy (Larson); sons, Todd (wife Christi) and Nathan (wife Rebecca); daughter Jill; grandsons, Max and Sam; and brother, Arvid (wife Norma).
Bennie William Kittelson, age 56 of Hudson, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at his home, following a courageous battle with cancer. Bennie was born on Sept. 29, 1953, in Hudson, the son of Harris and Jean (Huetmaker) Kittelson. He was a graduate of North St. Paul High School and attended Rasmussen College, where he received a diploma as a dental technologist.
James H. "Jim" "Sloc" Slocum, age 87, of River Falls, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at River Falls Area Hospital. He was born June 7, 1922, in Ellsworth, son of Berlin and Edna Pearl (Cook) Slocum. James went to school in Ellsworth. He then joined the Army Air Force in April of 1943 and remained in service until being honorably discharged on Feb. 26, 1946. After service, James went into the floor covering business for 14 years. On Sept. 27, 1948, he married Betty L. Hendrickson at Ezekiel Lutheran Church.
Garry Wayne Kitzmann, age 58, of River Falls, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at his home. Garry was born on Jan. 18, 1951, in Hastings, Minn., the son of Walter and Anna (Hopp) Kitzmann. He was a graduate of Hastings High School. Garry worked as a crane operator and welder for Meyer Machine in Hager City from 1971-1978 and later worked for Gerdau Ameristeel as a crane operator from 1978 to present. Garry married Suzanne M. Prochnow on April 22, 2006, in River Falls. He was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman and enjoyed writing poetry and gardening. Garry was a member of St.
Shawn M. McIntyre, age 39, of Baldwin, died as a result of cancer Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Shawn was born on Oct. 23, 1970, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Gary L. and Susan (Bygd) McIntyre. She attended Greenwood Elementary School in River Falls prior to graduating from the Baldwin High School. She furthered her education with an associate degree in hotel, motel, and restaurant management. Over the years, she became proficient in the development and management of commercial property.
Melvin L. Brown, age 93, of River Falls, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at River Falls Area Hospital. He was born in Springfield, Wis., on July 7, 1916, son of Herman and Minnie (Penrud) Brown. Melvin married Mildred Nelson in 1937. After her death, he married the love of his life, Jeanette Anderson, in 1963. Melvin farmed for many of his earlier years in life until 1962, then he started working for the River Falls school system as a custodian and retired at age 65 with 20 years of service. Melvin loved to fish.
