Florence Nickum died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at the age of 83. She was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Rochester, Minn., the daughter of Gerald and Katherine (Beach) Nickum. Florence married Zane Chaffee on June 2, 1944. Four children were born to this union. The couple later divorced. Florence described herself as "an awestruck citizen of the universe." Her active and curious mind led her to explore many different ideas, to obtain her bachelor's degree at the age of 55, and to take university courses as recently as this spring.
Gary Lee Waltz, age 63, of Maiden Rock, Wis., died Wednesday, June 23, at Regions Hospital, St. Paul, Minn. Funeral services for Gary will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 28, at St. Paul's UCC, Ellsworth. Rev. Susan Schneider Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. Masonic and OES service, at the Ellsworth Masonic Center, 400 High Point Dr., Ellsworth, Wis., and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Paul Dillon Howard, age 85, of River Falls, formerly of Hudson, died on June 24, 2010. A memorial gathering for Paul will be held from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, July 3, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. The gathering will conclude with military honors provided by the Hudson American Legion and VFW. Services are in the care of the O'Connell Family Funeral Home and Countryside Crematory - Hudson. Robert "Bob" A. Seekamp, 73, of River Falls, died Monday, June 21, 2010, at his home. Funeral services for Bob will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at Cashman-Hill Funeral Home, River Falls. Maxine Helen Matzek, 83, of Maiden Rock, Wis., died peacefully at her home on the family farm Friday, June 18, 2010, after a three-year battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, at Hill Funeral Home in Ellsworth. A Celebration Mass of Remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at St. John's Catholic Church in Plum City with visitation one hour prior. Father Ambrose Blenker will be officiating. Interment will be at St. John's Cemetery, Plum City.
Alice Mae (Ray) Straub (nee Gulbranson), age 77, of Ellsworth, passed away Friday, June 18, 2010, at River Falls Area Hospital. She was born in Ellsworth on May 23, 1933, daughter of Sigurd and Dorothy (Jenson) Gulbranson. Alice married Donald Ray Oct. 8, 1955; he died in 1985. She later married Carl Straub on Dec. 27, 1990; he died in 2001. Alice worked as a seamstress. She enjoyed reading and making quilts but most of all, she enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Matthew J. Seibel, age 21, passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident Friday, June 18, 2010. He was born on June 8, 1989, in Wabasha, Minn., to Joe and Sharon (Ferg) Seibel. Matt was a fulltime student and worked at Menards in the maintenance department, but his true passion was for his motorcycle and fireworks. He helped assemble and put on fireworks shows. He also loved hunting, fishing, and spending time with his buddies. Matt was very active in 4-H and the Wisconsin State 4-H Youth Leadership Council. He will be missed by all who knew him.
John D. Malmer, age 68, of Hudson, formerly of River Falls, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2010, at Regions Hospital, St. Paul. He was born in Oconomowoc, Wis., on July 12, 1941, son of Clarence "CJ" and Lillian (Olson) Malmer. John owned and operated Malmer Bros Red and White Store for many years in River Falls. After closing the store, he worked briefly for Ericksons Grocery, managing the meat department. Then he went on to work for 3M until his retirement in 2002.
Virgil Stanley White, age 64, of Baldwin, Wis., died on June 9, 2010, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn. Virgil was born in Gilman Township in Pierce County, Wis., to LeRoy and Ruby (Rice) White on June 19, 1945. When he was old enough, Virgil served in the Marine Corps with the 3rd Battalion of the 26th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division. He proudly served from 1965 to 1969 which included 4 tours to Vietnam. He was dedicated to the Corps and lived by the credo, "You've never lived 'til you've almost died.
