John D. Malmer, age 68, of Hudson, formerly of River Falls, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2010, at Regions Hospital, St. Paul. He was born in Oconomowoc, Wis., on July 12, 1941, son of Clarence "CJ" and Lillian (Olson) Malmer. John owned and operated Malmer Bros Red and White Store for many years in River Falls. After closing the store, he worked briefly for Ericksons Grocery, managing the meat department. Then he went on to work for 3M until his retirement in 2002.
Virgil Stanley White, age 64, of Baldwin, Wis., died on June 9, 2010, at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn. Virgil was born in Gilman Township in Pierce County, Wis., to LeRoy and Ruby (Rice) White on June 19, 1945. When he was old enough, Virgil served in the Marine Corps with the 3rd Battalion of the 26th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division. He proudly served from 1965 to 1969 which included 4 tours to Vietnam. He was dedicated to the Corps and lived by the credo, "You've never lived 'til you've almost died.
Floyd Henry Fischer, 89, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle went to be with his Lord in heaven on Wednesday, June 9, 2010. He was born on Nov. 22, 1920, in River Falls, Wis., to Joseph and Elizabeth Fischer. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-43 and was a member of the River Falls American Legion and the River Falls United Methodist Church. He retired in 1977 after 19 years with the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He married Florence Marion Guest on Sept. 20, 1944.
Lydia S. Milligan, 70, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of River Falls, died on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at University Hospital in Cleveland. A memorial service was held at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Euclid, Ohio. Lydia is survived by her four daughters, Celestina, Ruby, Samantha and spouse, and Jennifer, and five grandchildren.
Buel "Bill" Thaddeus Hall, age 85, of River Falls, died Monday, June 7, 2010, at the River Falls Area Hospital. He was born August 1, 1924, Hackleburg, Ala., son of William Levi and Ethie (Patterson) Hall. He married Joan Audrey Foster on Sept. 5, 1953, and Dolores Wilson on Feb. 8, 1992. Both have preceded him in death. Buel left school in the 9th grade to help support his family. As part of the New Deal he was accepted in the Welding Vocational Training Program in the Mobile, Ala., shipyards as an apprentice welder.
Debbie Meyer, 53, of River Falls, died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at her home after a long struggle with cancer. Debbie was born March 28, 1957, to Dorothy and Norbert Meyer. She attended the River Falls schools and graduated in 1975. After attending vocational school, she started her own cleaning service with many local businesses as her clients. In August 1997, she began working for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, first as a custodian and later transferred to the mailroom. Most recently she was the inventory control coordinator.
Alice Frances Singleton O'Malley of River Falls, age 101 and 360 days, born June 1, 1908, passed away peacefully May 27, 2010, with family at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; three sisters; and one grandson, Jimmy. She is survived by five sons, Pat (Dianne), Jimmy (Tresa), David (Ruth), Jerry, and Tim (Barb); a daughter, Helen (Phil); and a large extended family. She taught at St. Bridget's for 34+ years. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, River Falls. Fr. Gerald Harris will officiate.
Joan LaPorte, age 74, of River Falls, Wis., died on Tuesday, May 25, at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. Joan was born the daughter of Carl and Marian (Strubbe) Barker on April 20, 1936, in Ladysmith, Wis. She attended the Glen Flora schools. On May 8, 1954, Joan married Ray LaPorte in Ladysmith. Joan worked at the hospital in Prescott, Wis., and then spent 25 years with Smead Manufacturing in both Hastings and River Falls. She enjoyed quilting, reading, playing cards, and jigsaw puzzles.
Melva Marie Raasch, age 85, of Prescott, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010, at United Hospital in St. Paul. She was born in River Falls on Feb. 13, 1925, daughter of Jacob and Anna (Matzek) Cernohous. Melva owned and operated "The Gift Shop" for many years in Prescott. She loved to play bridge, poker, euchre, basically all card games. In her earlier years, she enjoyed bowling. Ralph and Melva traveled to many different countries. Melva was a long time member of St.
Andrew "Andy" Lindberg, 24, of River Falls, Wis., formerly of Sparta, Wis., passed away Friday, May 21, 2010, in Ellsworth, Wis., as a result of an automobile accident. Andy was born Jan. 1, 1986, to Kerry and Sharon (Graffunder) Lindberg, who delivered him at home. He attended Tarr Valley School outside of Tomah through the ninth grade. In 2004, Andy graduated from Sparta High School and went on to pursue a degree in sound engineering in Madison. In 2007, he began his career as a sound engineer and then started his own business, 3rd Shift Productions.
