Phyllis Linder passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at the Lutheran Home in River Falls. She was born Feb. 12, 1918, to Dennis and Nellie (Buckley) Golden of the El Paso Township. She graduated from the Spring Valley High School in 1935, and then the two-year education course from the River Falls Teachers College. Phyllis taught in rural schools in Pierce County for 12 years. Phyllis married Vernon Linder on July 20, 1940, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in El Paso, Wis. She returned to school and earned a B.S. degree from Wisconsin State University in River Falls and an M.A.
Robert D. "Bob" Sanford, age 80, of River Falls, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at United Hospital, St. Paul, Minn. Bob was born on June 10, 1929, in Minneapolis, Minn., and grew up in El Paso, Wis. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he received extensive battlefield injuries that he suffered from for most of his life. Despite his challenges in life he worked for Vollrath/Kolpak for 27 years. He was married to Reta Lansing in St.
Vivian Florence Hunter, of rural Roberts, died Jan. 12, 2010, from complications of a stroke. She was born in Isanti County, Minn., on August 16, 1921, the second daughter of Chancy and Florence (Engren) Braem. Within a year or two after her birth, the family left the Isanti farm for Alma, Wis. They moved several more times during Vivian's childhood, going to Morristown, Minn., back to Isanti County, then Minneapolis and St. Paul, as her father pursued work as a storekeeper and factory worker. John "Jack" Robert Kahut, age 75, of Minong, Wis., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn., surrounded by his family. Jack was born August 29, 1934, in River Falls, Wis., to the late Joseph and Ethel (Barron) Kahut. Jack was assigned to the U.S. Navy Fleet Service Aircraft Squadron 117, was awarded the National Defense Medal, served from 1952-1955, and was honorably discharged. Jack married Patricia "Patti" Phillips on June 8, 1957, and they enjoyed 52 wonderful years together.
Lorraine Elizabeth Marie Thoner, age 80, of Ellsworth, Wis., died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at United Hospital, St. Paul, Minn. Lorraine was born on Nov. 18, 1929, in Stockholm, Wis., the daughter of Robert and Ruth (Anderson) Hjerpe. Lorraine's family lived in Washington, D.C., as her father was in the Secret Service for a period of time. When Lorraine was 9, her mother died; Lorraine then went to live with her aunt and uncle, Roy and Edna Hjerpe back in Ellsworth, where they lived at the Ellsworth Bakery. She was a 1947 graduate of Ellsworth High School. On Sept.
Kenneth D. Hall, age 71, of River Falls, Wis., formerly of North St. Paul, Minn., passed away Nov. 25, 2009. Graveside services at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery (Assembly Area #2). Gathering of family and friends for memorial luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at Gulden's Restaurant, 2999 Highway 61, Maplewood, Minn., following service at Fort Snelling. Preceded in death by parents, Clarence and Estella; brother, Cory. Survived by brothers, Robert (Susan) and Larry (Rosemary); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
St. Croix County's agricultural agent, Lee Milligan, 55, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10. Milligan had been in Sacred Heart Hospital since Jan. 1 following an appendectomy and then twisted bowel surgery. According to an Extension email, Milligan took a turn for the worse over the weekend and died Sunday evening. Milligan, a Baldwin resident, is survived by his wife, Debra and daughters, Kari and Krista. Funeral arrangements are with OConnell Funeral Home in Baldwin. A celebration of life will be Friday, Jan. 15, at Faith Community Church, 777 Carmichael Road, Hudson.
Lee Milligan, age 55, of Baldwin, St. Croix County Agricultural Agent, peacefully went to his Lord Sunday, Jan. 10, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. A Celebration of Life for Lee Milligan will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at Faith Community Church, 777 Carmichael Rd., Hudson. Burial will be in the Long Lake Lutheran Cemetery near Rice Lake. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin and one hour prior to the service at church on Friday. Memorials are preferred.
Gordon Ralph Condit, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, after a well-lived life. He was born in Spring Valley, Wis., on Feb. 22, 1918, the only child of Litta Fern Springer Condit and Ralph George Condit. He was married to Maxine Retrum on August 3, 1946, in River Falls, Wis. They lived in Crossett, Ark., and DeRidder, La., before moving to Lake Charles, La., in 2000. Gordon went to school in Spring Valley until moving to River Falls, where he graduated from high school in 1936. He was active in sports such as football and loved canoeing on the rivers in Wisconsin.
Harris M. Samb, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at American Heritage Care Center in Hammond. Harris was born Feb. 7, 1920, in the town of Gilman to Martin and Nora (Gregerson) Samb. He was a graduate of Spring Valley High School, class of 1938. In 1939, he bought a trucking business. This trucking business was put on hold when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Jan. 9, 1942. He served his country during World War II for three and a half years. Three years of that time, he was overseas in Africa and Italy (China Burma India Theatre) with Gen.
