Alfred M. "Sonny" Landaal, son of Allen and Anna (Oak) Landaal, was born in Baldwin, Wis., on Oct. 4, 1928, and died on Feb. 23, 2011. He grew up in Woodville, Wis., where he graduated from high school. During his high school years and beyond, Al loved playing on the basketball team, which went to state in high school, and softball team, as well as acting in the school plays. When Al was younger, his first part-time job was a newspaper route. While still in high school, he spent time in the summer months with his brother-in-law, where he worked at the creamery in Sauk Center, Minn.
Emma Lou Hovde, age 91, of River Falls, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Mercy Gilbert Hospital in Gilbert, Ariz. She was born the daughter of Mandas and Emma (Christenson) Halverson on Sept. 28, 1919, in River Falls. On Nov. 5, 1936, she married H.C. Connie Hovde in Bayport, Minn. In 1947, Connie and Emma Lou purchased Anderson Hardware in Ellsworth and soon thereafter changed the name to Hovde Hardware. The couple sold the store in 1962. They enjoyed traveling with their Air Stream camper, boating on the St. Croix River, and classic and antique cars.
Helen A. Ensign, 84, Lake Mills, Wis., died on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011. She was born on Oct. 3, 1926, on a farm near Viroqua, Wis., to the late Torkel and Esther (Larson) Hendrickson. On Sept. 21, 1951, she married Robert (Bob) Ensign, who preceded her in death in 2000. Helen graduated from Viroqua High School in 1943 and the Milwaukee General Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. She completed her post-graduate studies at UW-Madison, the University of Minnesota and the University of Colorado-Boulder. She began her career in the Army Nurse Corps in 1948.
Fred W. Filkins, 98, of Prescott, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at the Prescott Nursing and Rehabilitation Community. Fred was born on Oct. 24, 1912, in Clifton Township, Pierce County, Wis., to Daniel and Christine (Bristol) Filkins. He married Viola Hamman on Dec. 19, 1936, in St. Paul. Fred farmed in the township of Clifton most of his life and drove truck and hauled corn until he was 90.
Marvin Joseph Ottman, age 88, of River Falls, formerly of Ellsworth, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 at Our House Senior Living, River Falls. Services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Hill Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Emma Marie Krause, age 87, passed away peacefully on Feb. 9, 2011, at the Prescott Nursing & Rehabilitation Community, Prescott, Wis. She was surrounded by her loving family and the devoted nursing home staff. Emma was born Dec. 17, 1923, to Lester and Myrtle (Clark) Phillips at her family home in East Lansing, Mich. As the middle daughter, Emma shared her home with older sister June (Fenner) and younger sister Nancy (Helms). Em, as she was known in her childhood, spent her early life in the city and on her grandparents' farm.
Constance Mae "Connie" (Kelly) Cudd, age 82, born Feb. 4, 1929, passed away peacefully on Feb. 5, 2011, at the Kinnic Long Term Care nursing home. She was surrounded by her loving family. Born to Francis and Hazel Kelly, she was a lifetime resident of River Falls. She graduated from River Falls High School in 1947 and was united in marriage to the love of her life, Herbert Cudd, on Oct. 18, 1947. Together they were blessed with two children, Charles and Cheryl (Brenna). The most important thing in her life was the deep love she had for her husband and her family.
Peggy Lashley, age 68, of Beldenville, Wis., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, in River Falls, Wis. She was born on Dec. 25, 1942, to Vernon and Ester Peterson in Baldwin, Wis. She attended the Roberts Public School and St. Croix Central in Hammond, Wis., where she graduated. Peggy worked for Smeads for 30 years, retiring in 2000. She was also a business owner in River Falls for 12 years. Peggy loved riding motorcycles, gardening, and being outside. She enjoyed walking her dogs and spending time with family and friends. Peggy had a big heart and was always helping someone.
Stanley C. Miller, age 90, of Roberts, Wis., and formerly of Afton, Minn., went to his heavenly home on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church, 880 Neal Ave. S., Afton. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to services at the church, and also from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St., Hudson, Wis.
Sterling Leighton Boatman passed away on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, in Red Wing, Minn. He was born on Nov. 18, 1949, to Harold and Vera Boatman in Red Wing. Sterling graduated from Ellsworth High School and attended University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
