Edith Barber (nee Johnston), age 90, of River Falls, Wis., passed away at WellHaven on Wednesday, March 16, 2011. She was born on Oct. 21, 1920, to George and Caroline Bruegger, in Beldenville, Wis. She was married to Lloyd "Curly" Johnston for 25 years, and together they had four children. During WWII she ran Curly's Eats, a restaurant they owned. Later in life her husband passed away in 1963. She subsequently remarried Robert Barber. Edith was a loving mother and wife and enjoyed fishing and playing cards. Edith was preceded in death by her husbands, Curly and Robert.
Grant Peter "Pete" Jones, age 56, passed away at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn., on Friday, March 11, 2011. Peter was born in Hudson, Wis., on Aug. 6, 1954. He was the son of Grant and Joyce Jones. Pete spent his entire life in River Falls. Pete enjoyed music of all kinds, whether it was playing or recording or listening. He was particularly fond of playing his guitars. The Kinnickinnic River held a special place in Pete's heart. He spent many hours fishing for trout along the river.
Amy L. Christmas, age 27, of Hudson, died unexpectedly at Hudson Hospital on Saturday, March 12, 2011. Amy was born on March 18, 1983, to Tony Hickman and Jill Peters in St. Louis Park, Minn. She grew up and attended school in Rockford, Minn. In 2003, Amy was married to James Christmas of New York, N.Y. The two were married at the Peace Garden on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, Minn. That marriage would be blessed with two children, Zoe and Isabel. The marriage later dissolved and Amy moved to River Falls, Wis. While there, Amy met Shad Deal.
Diana C. Steffan, age 80, of River Falls, Wis., and formerly of Harlingen, Texas, died on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at her home. Diana was born on Feb. 13, 1931, the daughter of Tommy and Katie Soard in Detroit, Mich. She attended school in Detroit through 11th grade. In February of 1951, she married Neil Patrick Soward. Diana was a foster parent to a number of children and worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Company while living in Michigan. She later worked as a production scheduler for CTS Corporation in Brownsville, Texas.
Jeanne Marie Wold, age 80, of River Falls, Wis., died Friday, March 11, 2011, at Comforts of Home in River Falls. She was born Sept. 5, 1930, to Carl and Ethelyn (Owen) Jacobson in Dallas, Wis., where she was raised and attended school. She was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Froiland at Dallas Lutheran Church and graduated from Barron High School. In 1952, she graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree of bachelor's of music education. On June 14, 1953, she was married to Elliot Wold of Barron at Dallas Lutheran Church with Rev. Froiland officiating.
Walter Henry Howard, age 88, of Hudson, and formerly of River Falls, passed away on March 5, 2011, at the Christian Community Home. He was born one of seven children to George A. and Edith M. (Stone) Howard on May 31, 1922, in Oconomowoc, Wis. Walter honorably served his country in the Army Glider Corps and then in the U.S. Navy. On Dec. 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Bowe in Dousman, Wis. They were blessed with four children: Tim, Holly, Nancy and Todd. Walter's true passion was flying; it was often said that he would rather fly than eat!
Inez Joan Baker, 66, passed away at her home in San Diego, Calif., on March 1, 2011. Inez was born in River Falls, Wis., the daughter of William and Ann Kirchner. She attended St. Mary's Big River School and Prescott High School. Inez graduated from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. She spent over 20 years working for the San Diego Police Department and also volunteered as secretary director of End Violence Against Women International ( www.evawintl.org .) She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Joseph R. Baker; two sons, Joseph R. Baker Jr., Thomas W.
Carol J. Martin, age 72, of River Falls, died after a brief illness on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. Carol was born the daughter of John and Marjorie (Peterson) Berg on Feb. 25, 1939, in Minneapolis, Minn. Carol's career at the First National Bank of River Falls spanned 20 years.
Donna Mae (nee Long) Gresback, 84, of River Falls, passed away on March 3, 2011, after a recent diagnosis of leukemia. Preceded in death by father, Edward Long, and mother, Ruth (Halliday) Long. Survived by loving husband of 60 years, Arnie; children, Scott (Barb) Gresback, Kim (Chris) Carley, and Brian (Karen) Gresback; grandchildren, Casey Gresback, Brian Carley (fiancée Kae Ford), Mike Carley, Alison Gresback, Joe Gresback; and special furry companion Sophia.
John Lee Moen, age 68, of Hudson, Wis., died suddenly Thursday, March 3, 2011, at his home. John was born on Feb. 18, 1943, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Jack and Elsie (Jensen) Moen. He married Suzanne Schaffer April 3, 1982. John worked as a certified registered nurse anesthetist for the River Falls Area Hospital for 33 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, loving to hunt, fish and golf. He also enjoyed woodworking and watching his grandchildren's sporting events, but he most enjoyed spending time with his wife, Susie, on their houseboat.
