Ray John Steves, of River Falls, died at River Falls Area Hospital on Friday, Oct. 8, 2010. He was born on August 24, 1931, in Menomonie, Wis., son of Vincent and Rosella (Topdahl) Steves. Ray was reared in Dunn County where he attended the Louisville Grade School. He went on to attend Durand High School and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. In the years following, he farmed with his father on the Steves' homestead. He married Marlene Buss from Menomonie on August 30, 1957.
Ann Marie (Wheeler) Miller, age 46, died on Oct. 7, 2010, at her home in Minneapolis after a four-year struggle with cancer. Born July 22, 1964, in Grand Forks, N.D., Ann graduated from River Falls High School, Wis., was an enthusiastic member of the marching band and was a proud graduate of the University of MN with a BS degree in therapeutic recreation. Survived by her loving husband, Tom; mother, Darlene; father, Larry; brothers, Chris, Matt and John; and her honorary grandchildren, Mason, Ella and Samone. Ann's joy in life was helping people with disabilities.
Robert John McConaughey, age 81, of Hudson, Wis., died on Oct. 6, 2010, at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, Minn. Services for Robert will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson. Burial will follow at the Houlton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson as well as 1 hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Donna Marie Hauser, age 77, of Hammond, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at United Hospital in St. Paul following complications of a heart attack. Donna was born on March 28, 1933, in Duluth, Minn., the daughter of Anton and Doria (Dufault) Elbinger. She was raised in Crookston where she attended a country grade school. She would meet an aspiring young man, Donald Paul Hauser. The two would be united in marriage on June 28, 1954, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Crookston. This union would be further blessed with five children: Wayne, MaryAnn, Alan, Richard, and Sharon.
George A. Jackson Jr., age 87, of River Falls, died on Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at the Lutheran Home in River Falls. George was born the son of George and Anna (Fernett) Jackson on Nov. 2, 1922, in St. Paul, Minn. He is a graduate of St. Paul Washington High School, attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from Northwestern TV & Electronic Institute.
Joyce E. Donegan, nee Sands, 88, of Cranbury, passed peacefully into God's loving arms Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at her daughter Peggy's house in Cranbury, N.J., from heart failure. Born in Hibbing, Minn., and raised in Duluth, Minn., Mrs. Donegan, formerly Joyce Horner until she remarried and became Joyce Donegan, graduated from Duluth Central High School and attended her high school reunions for 62 years. She was devoted to her family and was a very proud grandmother and great-grandmother.
Jack Edward Jenkins, age 25, of River Falls, died on Monday, Oct. 4, 2010. He was born the son of Todd and Lois (Halverson) Jenkins on August 16, 1985, in River Falls. Jack graduated from the River Falls High School with the class of 2004. Jack had a zest for life and was full of surprises. He had a big heart and always seemed able to pick up a friend in need with his contagious smile.
Duane E. Weiss, age 69, of River Falls, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2010, at United Hospital in St. Paul. He was born in River Falls on Jan. 14, 1941, son of Howard and Mildred (Matzek) Weiss. Duane graduated from Baldwin High School. Duane owned and operated Duane's Café on Main for many years. He enjoyed spending time showing horses and loved to dance. He always had a funny joke and was a great storyteller. He loved listening to old time music, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
Leonard L. Beskar, age 75, of Prescott, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at The Lutheran Home, River Falls, Wis. Leonard was born on Oct. 25, 1934, in River Falls, the son of Leo and Mildred (Maier) Beskar. Leonard's mother, Mildred, passed away at a very young age and his father later married Leona Buberl, who raised the family. He married Judith Kemp at St. Lukes Church in St. Paul, on August 13, 1960. To this union seven children were born. Leonard farmed in the Big River area until 1992, when he and Judy moved to Prescott. Leonard enjoyed playing baseball, softball, bowling and farming.
Kermit L. Garlid, age 81, of Seattle, Wash., died after a long illness on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010. A former professor of engineering and university administrator, Dr. Garlid was born on May 10, 1929, in Ellsworth, Wis., to Emil P. and Inga O. Garlid. He spent his childhood in the Ellsworth/River Falls area and attended a one room elementary school at Morton Corner. Following graduation from Ellsworth High School, he earned a BS with honors from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and a BChE with high distinction and a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota.
