Playwright Jeremy Bloom will visit UW-River Falls Friday, Dec.
The annual post-Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the River Falls Food Pantry organized by self-proclaimed "Grumpy Old Men" Mel Germanson, and Jerry Carter, returns for Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., curbside downtown at Veterans Park next to the Santa House. Germanson and Carter are working this year with Karen Kielas and Monte Hanson. Last year’s collection brought in seven pickup truck loads of food and household paper products, plus $10,000 in cash and check donations – all for the River Falls Community Food Pantry, 222 N.

Hudson — Graphic design firm Christiansen Creative (CC) is launching a business community initiative called The Box Effect during the 2014 holiday season. The inaugural campaign’s goal is to collect donated resources that easily fit into boxes for Turningpoint for Victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence, in River Falls. A secondary goal is to help organizations that may not have access to marketing support gain community awareness.

River Falls Junior Girl Scout Troop 54227 spent a recent weekend at Dick’s Fresh Market collecting donations and funds for Gregory’s Gift of Hope, a no- kill rescue and re-home program located in New Richmond. They raised $680 in donations, 170 pounds of food, cleaning supplies, and numerous toys.

First National Bank of River Falls employees recently organized their fifth annual “Treat Yourself to Wellness” 5K run, walk or roll event, raising $7,750. “Treat Yourself to Wellness” is a certified 5K course in River Falls that was designed by bank employees to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle in the surrounding communities. The run, walk, or roll event has helped families of all ages, experience, and particularly first-time 5K participants, complete a race.
This week's featured photo was taken by Jack Thomas at a parking area for fishermen on River Drive, where the road changes from northbound to eastbound. It was taken about 3 years ago after an early morning frost. "I took over 100 shots and got one or two that I really liked," Thomas said.
