There is improvement in the economy, U.S. Rep. Ron Kind (D-La Crosse), told a small business roundtable group Tuesday morning at the UW-River Falls Hudson Center. But every time the economy gets a leg up, something unexpected gets in the way, he said. "The spike in energy prices is holding things back," Kind said.
The St. Croix County Board of Supervisors slogged through an ocean of motions and a slew of resolutions at its regular March 8 meeting. Even with five items removed from the agenda to be dealt with at a later time, the task at hand was substantial. To open the meeting, Board Chair Daryl Standafer stepped down from the dais to acknowledge and congratulate District 8 Supervisor James Stauffer on the recent birth of his daughter. The 34-year-old Stauffer is one of two young members of the County Board and thus one of the few eligible candidates for new fatherhood.
Two people were booked into the St. Croix County Jail and arrest warrants have been issued for two others held by Ramsey County (Minn.) authorities following a Friday afternoon burglary and shooting incident in the town of Emerald. The panel interviewed six individuals from outside the department in the process. The county board approved a measure earlier this month to speed up the process for filling the vacancy. Sheriff Dennis Hillstead retires Jan.
A small informational picket line marched at the government center in frigid weather the morning of Dec. 7, but that didn't stop St. Croix County Board supervisors, who were inside, from passing many resolutions. The picket line was set up by Friends of the St. Croix County Nursing Home. They took issue with the board's failed attempt to eliminate the facility's budget all together but then successfully slashed the sum in half. The board was able to appoint a new medical examiner in probably the most discussed piece of business of the day.
Restoring justice and healing the hurt caused by crime sounds like a big task but it's one Kris Miner has enthusiastically signed on for. As director of the St. Croix Valley Restorative Justice program for St.
Whether anybody wants to admit it or not, the snow season is just around the corner. In preparation for those nasty days when the roads must be cleared early and sometimes often, St. Croix County Highway Department truck drivers took part in a two-day program in Hammond designed as a refresher course on the perils of the road. "It's an annual safety refresher," said Jim Van Den Elzen, who heads up the Crossroads Safety Management Group and brought the sophisticated technical equipment that makes up the simulator to Hammond.
