Prior to joining the Journal, Burrows served as sports editor with Ledger Publications in Balsam Lake, Wis. A native of Bayonne, N.J. and a U.S. Navy veteran, Burrows attended Marquette University before completing his studies at UW-River Falls in 1992.

The River Falls Fighting Fish amateur baseball team will make its fifth straight appearance in the Wisconsin Baseball Association Regional Playoffs when they travel to Rib Lake to take on the Jim Falls Sturgeons in a first round game this Saturday, Aug. 10, at noon. The Fighting Fish, 2011 WBA state champs, drew the No. 2 seed in the four-team bracket after compiling a record of 11-4 in St. Croix Valley Baseball league play, 18-10 overall. Jim Falls, the No. 3 seed, finished tied for fourth in the Chippewa River Baseball League with a mark of 14-8.
Alex Call, who has been tearing up St. Croix Valley Baseball League pitching this summer after earning Big Rivers Conference Player of the Year honors with the Wildcats last spring, is making one more stop on the baseball ladder of success before heading to Ball State University later this month. The 2013 River Falls High School graduate joined the Eau Claire Express of the prestigious Northwoods League last week and made his debut with the team over the weekend.
The River Falls American Legion Post 121 baseball team went 3-0 at last week's Menomonie Regional, including defeating New Richmond twice, to advance to the 2013 Wisconsin State American Legion Class AA State Tournament this weekend in Kewaunee County. River Falls will take a record of 20-11 into its first round state tourney game against Menasha (26-6) Friday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. at Luxemberg-Casco High School field. Last week in Menomonie, the River Falls Post 121 team defeated New Richmond, 11-0, Menomonie, 5-4, and New Richmond again, 8-3, to earn a berth at state.

The River Falls American Legion Post 121 baseball team had its four game winning streak snapped when it dropped the second game of a doubleheader at Altoona Monday night, 2-1. The Legion took the first game 3-1 for their fourth win in a row. Last week, they defeated Menomonie, 13-3, Monday; Hudson, 14-4 on Tuesday; and Chippewa Falls, 5-4, Wednesday night.
After holding on for a 4-2 victory over Prescott at home last Wednesday, the River Falls American Legion Post 121 baseball team went 2-2 at a weekend tournament in Chippewa Falls with all four games decided by one run. River Falls opened the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Wausau and beat Union Grove 3-2 on Saturday. Sunday they defeated Green Bay, 11-10, before dropping a 4-3 decision to Marshfield.
