The Wildcat boys swimming and diving team defeated host Superior, 129-80 but lost to conference-leader Hudson, 176-69, in a Big Rivers Conference tri-dual at Superior Friday, Jan. 5.
The team of John Augustin, Seth Larsen, Connor Baar, and Logan McLaughlin capped the meet by winning the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3 minutes, 37.02 seconds, giving the Wildcats enough points to beat Superior but Hudson's depth and well-roundedness earned them the victory over both teams.
"This was a great meet where there were better races than just a head-to-head dual," Wildcat coach Eric Emerson said. "We were able to compete against two of our conference opponents and it seemed like we raced well."
Emerson said one of the better races of the night came in the 100 breaststroke, where Wildcat Anders Olson was able to drop multiple seconds to finish second in 1:07.42 just behind Raider Ethan Hanson's time of 1:07.1.
The team of McLaughlin, Olson, Augustin and Larsen opened the night by winning the 200 medley relay with a season-best time of 1:47.6 before Augustin and Larsen went one-two in the 50 freestyle in 23.81 and 24.19 seconds, respectively. Alden Brunner swam a 29.27, putting all three Wildcat swimmers in the race under the 30-second mark.
After diving, where Huck Boles and Parker Peterschmidt were able to get second and fourth, respectively, scores between Hudson and River Falls were close.
McLaughlin was able to get another Wildcat win in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.58 seconds and Augustin was third in 53.69, before Olson gave Hudson's Hanson a run for his money in the 100 breaststroke and Augustin, Larsen, Baar and McLaughlin closed the night with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Wildcats will compete in a BRC dual at Rice Lake Thursday, Jan. 18, before the Eau Claire Invitational Saturday, Jan. 20, at Eau Claire North.
