Gun-deer hunt second safest on record

State officials say the just completed gun-deer hunt was the second safest on record.

Tim Lawhern, a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources spokesman, said there were only six shooting accidents, way down from the average of 16 over the last 10 years.

Three victims were killed, and three others survived gunshot wounds.

The number of shooting deaths was one more than the 10-year average.

Lawhern said all six mishaps could have been avoided, if hunters would have followed the basic rules of firearm safety.

In addition to the shootings, at least one hunter died from a medical condition and another was wounded by a bear.
