Women skaters extend streak
The fifth-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team swept UW-Superior in a home-and-home series, 7-5, Friday, Jan. 26 at Hunt Arena, and 5-0, Saturday, Jan. 27 in Superior to extend its unbeaten streak to 11 games and improve to 15-4-2 on the season.
Erica Schramel and Haley Nielson scored two goals apiece and Callie Hoff and Kora Torkelson each had two assists in Friday night's home victory. Madi Nolan, Payton Rudiger and Maddy Illikainen tallied a goal apiece and Angie Hall and Tatyana Delaittre combined for 24 saves as the Falcons outshot the Yellowjackets, 36-29.
Saturday in Superior, Torkelson, Carly Moran and Hailey Herdine had a goal and assist each and Rudiger and Sam Young each scored a goal while Delaittre stopped all 11 shots she faced to record her second shutout of the season. UWRF outshot Superior, 28-11.
The Falcons will visit St. Olaf College Wednesday, Jan. 31 before hosting the College of St. Scholastica Tuesday, Feb. 6, at 7:05 p.m.
Men's hockey falls to Hamline
The Falcon men's hockey team lost its fourth one goal game in a row, 3-2, to Hamline University Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Hunt Arena.
Hamline scored with nine seconds left in regulation to drop the Facons to 6-13-2 on the season.
UWRF jumped on the board first on a goal by Cayden Cahill 4:59 into the first period before the Pipers took a 2-1 lead after two. Eddie Matsushima tied the score with a power play goal 1:46 into the third period and each team came up empty on power play opportunities until Hamline scored on a wrap-around goal with nine seconds left to earn the win.
UWRF goalie Zach Quinn finished with 19 saves as the Falcons outshot the Pipers, 25-22.
The Falcons, 0-4 in WIAC play, will host UW-Superior (8-11-2, 1-2-1) Friday, Feb. 2, at 7:05 p.m before visiting UW-Stout (5-13-2, 2-2) Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m.
Women's hoops loses twice
The Falcon women's basketball team dropped a pair of WIAC games last week, losing to UW-Eau Claire, 86-52, Wednesday, Jan. 24 at home and dropping a 68-45 decision Saturday, Jan. 27, at 14th-ranked UW-Oshkosh.
Eau Claire (13-6, 5-3) jumped out to a 22-2 first quarter lead and never looked back in its 34-point win over the Falcons at Page Arena. The score was 45-17 by the break as the Blugolds improved to 13-5 overall, 5-2 in WIAC play.
Brynn Liljander led the Falcons with 13 points and six rebounds while Jaycie Gerding scored 10 points.
Saturday at UW-Oshkosh (16-2, 6-2) , the Falcons were held scoreless in the third quarter as the Titans turned a three-point halftime lead into a 23-point win to improve to 16-2 overall, 6-2 in conference play.
Crystal Pearson was the lone Falcon in double figures with 12 points.
UWRF, now 14-5 overall, 5-3 in WIAC play, will visit UW-La Crosse (12-7, 5-3) Wednesday, Jan. 31, before hosting UW-Stevens Point (9-10, 3-5) Saturday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m.
Track sweeps Winter Classic
The UW-River Falls men's and women's track and field teams both took first place at the six-team UWRF Winter Classic Saturday, Jan. 27, at Knowles Center.
Former Wildcat Tim Rixmann won the long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 6-inches and cleared 39-11.25 to win the long jump to pace the Falcon men while Kimberly Robertson won the 55 meter hurdles in 9.48 seconds and cleared 9-feet, 9.25-inches to win the pole vault to lead the women.
Kyle Dorosz took first in the men's 55 meter hurdles with a time of 6.64 seconds while Justin Barnes won the men's high jump with a leap of 6-2 and Colton Sorensen won the pole vault with a height of 15-5.75.
Abigail Bakken boosted the Falcon women's score with a first place throw of 37-10.75 in the shot put while the distance medley relay team of Katelyn Moore, Emily Klatt, Emma Duetsch and Kaitlyn Ableidinger placed first with a time of 13:04.11.
Next up for the Falcons is the Wartburg College Select Meet Saturday, Feb. 3, in Waverly, Iowa.
