Fusion shoot down Stars

The third-ranked St. Croix Valley Fusion won their third straight game with a 3-0 victory over the Western Wisconsin Stars (Somerset/Amery/New Richmond/Osceola/St. Croix Falls) Tuesday, Dec. 19, in Somerset.

The win boosted St. Croix Valley's record to 8-1 on the season heading into this week's Culver's Cup in Madison.

The Fusion will open Culver's Cup play Wednesday, Dec. 27, against seventh-ranked Wisconsin Valley Union (Stevens Point/Wisconsin Rapids/Marshfield) at 5:15 p.m. at Hartmeyer Ice Arena. They will face either Superior or Onalaska Thursday, Dec. 28. The other side of the 8-team bracket includes the Metro Lynx against Brookfield Glacier and fourth-ranked University School of Milwaukee against Lakeland.

Last Tuesday in Somerset, the Fusion scored a goal in each period and sophomore goalie Sydney Seeley stopped all 24 shots she faced in a 3-0 win over the Stars.

Sophomore Gabby Bresina scored the first two goals of the game, the first at 4:44 of the opening period assisted by senior Jordan Erickson and freshman Jaden Woiwode.

Bresina's second goal came at the 10:43 mark of the second with Woiwode assisting and gave St. Croix Valley a 2-0 lead.

Seeley stopped all 10 shots she faced in the third period while junior Anna Albrightson scored an unassisted goal at the 10:23 mark to make the final 3-0.

Each team was whistled for two penalties in the game while shots on goal were even at 24 apiece.
