Boys blanked in hockey opener

The Wildcat hockey team outshot Onalaska 29-28, including 12-9 in the third period, but couldn't find the back of the net in a 5-0 loss to the Hilltoppers in the season opener for both teams Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Wildcat Centre.

River Falls trailed 3-0 at the end of the second period and had three power play opportunities in the third period, including a 5-on-3 for a span of 43 seconds, but came up empty. Onalaska made it a 4-0 game 9:29 into the third period and scored again 52 seconds later to make the final 5-0.

River Falls finished 0-for-5 on the power play while Onalaska was 0-for-4. Wildcat goalie Jake Miller finished with 23 saves.

The Wildcats will jump right into Big Rivers Conference play against defending state champion Hudson this Thursday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Centre before visiting Chisago Lakes for a nonconference game Saturday, Dec. 2.
