Wildcats advance in soccer sectional

The River Falls girls’ soccer team advanced to the WIAA sectional championship game with a 3-0 win over Tomah Thursday in Tomah.

Junior Breanna Gilbertson had two goals, sophomore Emma Benusa scored the other and freshman goalkeeper Micah Rivera posted her third straight shutout of the playoffs to send the Cats to the sectional final this Saturday, June 14, against Rhinelander. The winner advances to the state tournament June 20-21 at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

River Falls takes a record of 12-6-2 into Saturday’s sectional championship game while Rhinelander, who advanced with a 7-0 sectional semifinal win over Marshfield, comes in at 17-3-1.

“The girls have worked extremely hard all season, and are playing their best games at the right time,” head coach Charles Conley said. “As a staff we are very proud of the efforts and performance we've seen as of late. It really is a testament to their hard work.”

Saturday’s sectional championship game will be played at 4:30 p.m. at Wausau East High School in Wausau.
