Wildcat senior Trent Powell earned his second medal in the boys’ 1600 meter run while sophomore Karly Murphy earned a fourth place medal in the girls’ discus at the WIAA State Track and Field Championships over the weekend at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in La Crosse.

Powell posted a personal best time of 4 minutes, 13.68 seconds in the 1600 meter run to finish sixth in the final race of his high school career. He took fifth in the 2013 race in 4:14.77.

Murphy broke the school record in the girls’ discus for the third time this season, posting a throw of 128-feet, 6-inches, to earn a fourth place medal.

The Wildcat girls’ 4x400 meter relay team of Isabel Shafer, Amelia Kjos, Rachel Shew and Annie Wagner shattered the old school record of 4:02.75 set at last year’s state meet. The foursome combined for a time of 3:58.26 in Friday’s preliminaries to qualify for Saturday’s finals, where they came up just short of a spot on the awards podium with a time of 4:01.28.

See the June 12 print edition of the River Falls Journal for more on the state meet.
