Men's hockey advances in WIAC Tourney
The UW-River Falls men's hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the WIAC Tournament with a 7-1 victory and a 3-3 tie at UW-Superior Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17.
The Falcons will next face regular season champion and top-seed UW-Stevens Point in a two-game semifinal series this weekend, Feb. 23-24 in Stevens Point.
UWRF, the No. 5 seed in the WIAC Tournament, got a pair of goals from Peter Karavos and three point nights from Aussie Miller and Cayden Cahill in last Friday's 7-1 victory over the fourth-seeded Yellowjackets.
Miller and Cahill had a goal and two assists each and David Landau, Christian Hausinger and Joe Druplak added a goal each in last Friday's 7-1 victory. Superior scored the first goal of the game before UWRF answered with seven straight, including three goals in the final two periods, to earn the win. Falcon goalie Zach Quinn finished with 26 saves as the Falcons outshot the Yellowjackets, 45-27.
Saturday Cahill scored his second goal of the game with 3 minutes, 15 seconds remaining to tie the score 3-3, and Quinn stopped all seven shots he faced in overtime, to give UWRF a 3-3 tie and the series win.
Cahill opened the scoring 1:09 into the game and Miller gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead 3:26 into the second period but Superior scored twice to take a 3-2 lead before Cahill scored late to salvage the tie.
Quinn made a total of 41 saves as Superior outshot UWRF, 44-24.
Women skaters blanked by Eau Claire
The seventh-ranked Falcon women's hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision at 10th-ranked UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Feb. 17, to even the season series with the Blugolds at 1-1-1.
UWRF defeated Eau Claire 4-1 on Nov. 18 and tied the Blugolds, 3-3, Feb. 10. Despite Saturday's loss the Falcons have already clinched their fifth straight WIAC regular season crown with a conference record of 5-2-2 (17-5-3 overall). UWEC is second at 4-3-2 (15-6-4).
The Falcons will host UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC Tournament semifinals Friday, Feb. 23, at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena. UW-Eau Claire will host UW-Superior in the other semifinal series with the WIAC title game scheduled for Saturday, March 3, at the home of the highest remaining seed.
Women's hoops finishes sixth in WIAC
The Falcons women's basketball team split their final two games of the regular season, losing at UW-Eau Claire, 72-60, Wednesday, Feb. 14, before beating UW-Platteville, 75-61, Saturday, Feb. 17, at Page Arena.
The split left the Falcons at 7-7 in WIAC play (16-9 overall) in sixth place in the final conference standings. They opened the WIAC Tournament Tuesday, Feb. 20, at third-seed UW-Oshkosh.
Freshman Brianna Koop came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points in the Falcons' Senior Night victory over Platteville. Senior Taylor Karge contributed 17 points and seven rebounds and senior Brynn Liljander added 16 points and five steals while sophomore Crystal Pearson had seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Three nights earlier at Eau Claire, the Blugolds used a 21-12 second quarter run to erase a two-point deficit on their way to defeating the Falcons, 72-60.
Liljander led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds while junior Taylor Paulsrud finished with 14 points.
