Mens' basketball: Falcons can't gain ground
The UW-River Falls men's basketball team split a pair of close games last week, beating UW-La Crosse, 77-74, in overtime Wednesday night, Jan. 31 at Page Arena before losing to UW-Stevens Point for the second time this season, 66-64, Saturday, Feb. 3 in Stevens Point.
The split left the Falcons even in WIAC play at 5-5 (14-6 overall), heading into games this week at UW-Stout (1-9, 7-14) Wednesday, Feb. 7, and home against UW-Whitewater (6-4, 16-5) Saturday, Feb. 10.
Last Wednesday against La Crosse (3-7, 11-10), the Falcons trailed by 17 at the break, 38-21, before tying the game, 67-67, on a layup by Clay Seifert with 22 seconds remaining. Brennan Witt scored the first basket in overtime and the Falcons never trailed.
Seifert finished with a team-high 20 points in the win and Witt scored 19, including six of the Falcon's 10 points in overtime, while Alex Herink contributed 17 points and seven rebounds.
Saturday at Stevens Point (9-1, 15-6), the Pointers got a basket by Mark Nelson with 4 seconds remaining to defeat the Falcons, 66-64.
UWRF trailed by 11 midway through the first half before taking a 37-35 halftime lead. The Falcons took their biggest lead, 51-44, on a layup by Devin Buckley with 13:36 remaining but the Pointers went on a 5-0 run to take a 64-62 lead with 1:15 left.
Matt Keller hit a jumper to tie the score, 64-64, with ten seconds remaining but the Pointers answered with a quick basket by Nelson to earn the win.
Herink had 13 points and seven rebounds in the loss and Witt had 13 points and six boards while Seifert finished with 10 points and five assists.
